Mountain Biking Blue Heron
#44 of 549 mountain bike trails in North Carolina
Blue Heron is the newest singletrack in Greensboro! The Greensboro Fat Tire Society has been working hard constructing Blue Heron since spring of 2009. The trail head is directly across the street from the end of Reedy Fork trail and can be as an extension of Reedy Fork by simply crossing the street. Trail construction should be complete by the winter of 2009.
The trail starts off meandering by the shore line of beautiful Lake Townsend. There is plenty of variety too as the trail leads you out of the woods for multiple power line crossings. Blue Heron flows great and is relatively easy for any rider to tackle. A few sections have gullies and dips that are fun to blast through and out of.
One way Blue Heron is about 3 miles, so if you go out and back you will get right at 6 miles in.

From Greensboro, take Church Street north towards Lake Townsend area. Trail head is on the right just after crossing over the lake. The trail ends at Yanceyville Street and can be picked up there as well.
I rode here Saturday and it was a little better than two weeks ago because it was more packed down resulting in more speed. The only negative I can say is there are a few roots to keep you off the seat, but I see alot of riders on hardtails out here. This trail doesn't have much climbing to speak of, it's more of a constant flow of slightly rolling terrain, about like Wild Turkey without the big hills. There are whole families that ride here but I don't know if they have to walk the tough gullies are not. The toughest one is a steep double gully 6 to 8 feet deep with a sharp peak rooty mid hump where you can't get much of a run to clear the second half wall lip. I get a pretty good run in and you hit hard bottoming out the 100mm front fork. It's a challenge both directions and I've cleared it every time. This trail is awesome if you don't want the speed of County Park or the more technical Wild Turkey.
Thank |This was my first ride on Blue Heron. It's been some time since I have been on an MTB and boy did it show! This trail was awesome! 4 or 5 different types of terrain, red clay, soft pine needles, little sand and some (not too awful many) roots. The dips and climbs were GREAT! I had so much fun, I can't wait to get back in the saddle.
Thank |Wet/muddy in a couple spots...
Thank |Great trail loved it and loved that it connected to king fisher and the Reedy fork Trail too
Thank |My wife and I are new to mountain bike riding and we are in our early fifties. That said, we are both active and in good shape. Most of our local trails are fairly tame, The Blue Heron trail is in a beautiful setting, and presents various challenges for the beginner, but nothing too technical or difficult. Great flow with small rolling hills, some tight turns and a few berms. An awesome trail to increase your skill level and gain confidence if you are a beginner. Great atmosphere which is one of the reasons we took up mountain bike riding. We traveled three hours and stayed the weekend to ride this trail. We will be back.
Thank |Blue Heron is a great riding trail, in that you can ride in the woods and enjoy your surroundings. There are some rooty areas, but this is more of a just-want-to-ride trail rather than a high technical trail. Connect it to Reedy Fork for a nice long ride.
Thank |Nice track, a mix of everything from technical to scenic to fast. Look forward to my next ride.
Thank |Good ride not hard and not easy. It is worth the ride for sure
Thank |Nice ride will ride again
Thank |Will ride again this week
Thank |Great beginner trail; has some flow areas but also some straights. Short, at a little less than three and a half miles long, with a fair amount of twists, turns, drops, and climbs.
Thank |Certainly a must for Greensboro riders. Like the reviews say, there's not a lot of technical riding or major elevation changes, but it kept a smile on my face. Some really fast sections and fun rollers. I sometimes park on Church St. and ride Blue Heron out-n-back as a warmup and then Reedy Fork out-n-back for a great workout. One day I'm going to ride the Big 5 in one giant loop (Owl's Roost, Wild Turkey, Reedy Fork, Blue Heron, and Country Park).
Thank |I ride this trail once a week & really enjoy it. You can ride at a quick pace throughout. A must ride.
Thank |Flowy, fun, good for everyone. Lots of cool stuff to see, decent climbs, twists, small obstacles. Great for Novice-Beginners and generally fun for everyone. Great trail.
Thank |Great trail will ride again, great for beginner
Thank |Great trail. Very fast, not hard, not technical, but will work you out if you ride the whole out & back without stopping. Most fun to ride trail in Greensboro. New trail at the end - King Fisher. It's a mile loop. Tons of creek bed washouts! Great addition!
Thank |Trail is moderately difficult. 2.2 hrs. Wear shorts in ST.
Thank |I love this trail! Very fun! * Review edited 1/22/2012
Thank |This is a great, fun trail. Not a lot of climbing. Definitely one of the faster trails around. Very popular among the locals regardless of skill level.
