Mountain Biking Mammoth Trail
#31 of 138 mountain bike trails in Minnesota
Unofficial trail (i.e., no land manager). Tight and twisty singletrack through forest and fields. Large network that is unmarked. Can get turned around easily. Relatively young trail that will get better with age, unless it's lost to suburban development. Best ridden with a local.

(from Twin Cities) 494 west to SH 5, SH 5 west to SH 41, SH 41 south to Pioneer Trail in Chaska. At the intersection of SH 41 and Pioneer Trail you will see a large Target Store on the east side of SH 41. Take Pioneer Trail west. You will see Jonathan Elementary school on your right. Turn right just after you pass the school then hang another immediate right onto a gravel road (McKnight Park). This road will lead up to a parking lot (you can see the back of the school from here). You can get to the trail from this parking lot. The address of the school is 110300 Pioneer Trail West, Chaska MN 55318.
Good local trail. Best ridden with a local otherwise you will probably get lost due to lack of map.
Thank |Trail did have some soft areas, but it was early season so I'm still giving 5 stars. It's a fun trail, with plenty of sections that are different and more challenging than the popular NW metro trails. Fun!
Thank |fun course overgrown in some areas but a good work out. Very easy to get turned around and its hard to find the trails intially
Thank |An almost endless web of both well groomed trails to some very crude, rough ones. I have much more trail to see and actually ride on out there.
Thank |I am glad I rode on this trail with someone who has been there before otherwise I would have been lost since it is not marked but you should have no problem following the path if you know your way back. Some trail looks as if it one way or two way and it also have some nice drops and ramps. This trail is not suitable for beginners unless they want to become a daredevil.
Thank |This trail isn't for a beginner mountain biker and a well kept secret.
Thank |Rode this trail last fall. No markings and poorly maintained (if at all). Hard to discern singletrack turns into thick brush or grass and you're required to back-track. Does have one giant drop which is cool but it only seemed to work one way.
Then again, I wasn't familiar with the trail and repeated rides might prove useful. I wouldn't make a trip to this side of town for it though.
Thank |10 yr old had a blast😄. So did our dogðŸ¾ðŸ¾
Thank |It's been a while since I rode this trail but like previous reviewers I found it poorly marked. I followed 2 local riders in and covered a lot of ground following them. Eventually I could not keep up and was completely lost. tried to back track with no success. Ended up jumping out in to a neighborhood and used my phone map app to get back to parking lot. I also donated about 2 pints of blood to the swarms of mosquitos in the woods. Could be a great trail with better markings, trail map, bug spray, etc...
Thank |You could spend all day trekking this trail and won't ride everything. Signage was poor the last time I rode there. There're better trails around like Leb or Murphy. With a little work it could be fun place to ride though
Thank |Awesome ride, lots of fun turns. The trail can be really narrow in some areas so ride careful. lots of fun step descents right into a step incline. Be careful your first time out as it is easy to get lost. Loads of fun though!
Thank |I rode this trail in the late summer of 2011. The extreme North-Eastern loop was quite overgrown and didn't feel like it was ridden much. Some portions of the trail North of the railroad tracks are marked with No Trespassing signs but a hiker I spoke with told me that she used the trails daily with no problems. The entrance road off of McKnight Road to the parking lot is now paved. There is a large event facility with toilets and a covered picnic area located there as well. The easiest way to find the singletrack is to ride the paved path North from the parking lot then cross the East/West paved path into the woods. The trail closely parralels that path. Most of the trail is fun and tight but not really well maintained. I crossed one wooden bridge that needed repair. All in all it is a nice intermediate ride and well used West of the lake and South of the railroad tracks. On my next ride I will avoid the loop Northeast of Mcknight Lake.
Thank |Rode this again over Memorial Weekend. Great tacky, tight, and technical singletrack. There is some controversy about land ownership on one loop, and it is currently posted. See forums on MORC website for details.
