Mountain Biking Back Yard Trails
#36 of 549 mountain bike trails in North Carolina
These are two area for the trails. The first is about 3-4 miles. Follow the arrows. At the end of the trail depending on which way you go, you will end up at Tyvola. You can cross Tyvola and after will be on Farmbrook. Cross the road and your first left into a deadend you will see the trails behind a house. This is the second part and longer of the trails about 6 or 7 miles. Not to many people know about the trails. Don't even try to ride a day after rain. I was sliding and slipping all over the place. This is a hard course.

This is a hidden secret in Charlotte. The Tarheel Trailblazzers give some info but did not develop the trail. I heard about this trail from some neighbors who know of a bike fanatic who put this together. I think they said the guy was a Rode-biker? The best way to get to these trails is off Senceca Rd. That is from South-Blvd or Park-Rd. From Park-rd make a left on Wedgewood. After that turn make another left before the church which is Wedgewood Baptist. If you cross Tyvola you have gone to far. Of course if you want to park your car use Pine-wood school up the street. From S-Blvd make a right and park at the school. You enter from a circle that is a dead-end.

Love riding this local trail. It's very technical and keeps you paying attention to your form. Definitely not a trail for beginners or kiddies. The one negative would be getting more signage, including some at the entrances mapping out the various trails with in. Thank you to all that keep this trail in great condition.
Thank |Best trail in Charlotte hands down. This trail system is a triple threat! Flowy, technical, and some sweet jumps. I highly recommend it! I would not bring little Johnny with you or any newbies, this trail does require some experience.
Thank |Rode these trails recently when in Charlotte visiting a buddy. These are pretty kick ass, hand cut local trails with lots of features tucked in behind a neighborhood. Props to whoever built these trails!
Thank |This is a great trail to work on all your fundamentals and learn some new tricks. There is little flow to this trail. It has a lot of technical places to work on just about everything you can imagine. Rock gardens, big roots, drop offs, steep technical descents and climbs. I had a good time out here working on techniques and body position. I gained a lot of confidence in the hour I had to play today.
Thank |If you like flow - this is the last place you want to go.
This is a super technical trail, where you can never really grab speed. Tight turns, a lot of big roots and rocks.
Not my type of riding - may be for some people but not for me.
Aside from this, it was extremely overgrown, a ton of Ivy, and branches in your face constantly.
Much prefer Sherman and USWWC over this any day.
Thank |Great trail for the location- could use better marking- just want to say that this seems to be marked as expert based on the jump lines- if you are looking for a trail with some jump park attributes you will like this- if you are looking for a ride that will kick your ass this is not it.
Thank |Two new jump lines have been added in the past couple months and have added a cool spot to hang out and learn how to dirt jump.
Thank |Mixed review.
I loved the technically challenging parts like the rail crossings, tight turns and whoops. The rocks and roots kept it interesting - loved it. Rode with my hardtail no problem.
The major downfall for me was the lack of directionals. Def not enough signs and I found myself riding the same part a few times. About two thirds of the way in I had no idea where I was going. I flew in from overseas to ride trails and I would probably skip this one. Great trail but the lack of directionals are frustrating.
Thank |Really super fun great workout 10 miles something like that be ready for a great break and great bumps great rocks great roots everything of wonderful old timey East Coast Piedmont trail with the liver
Thank |Hats off to those who've built and maintain the Back Yard Trails. They've done an amazing job with the space available. I've ridden there several times now, and will continue to do so as it's so close to the office. Nice jump lines that beginners can bypass, some natural technical stuff, and creative obstacles. The poo trail is neat, even though it's a slow ride. There are only quick, punchy climbs with short descents, but it's good to go in terms of getting your heart rate up.
The only drawback to riding the Back Yard Trails is that in spite of the great work done in creating these trails in such a small area, it's size requires lots of tight turns, doubling back on itself, and sometimes criss-crossing. As a result, you really can't ever settle into a groove and spin. So, if you're in the mood for a longer, XC type ride, this shouldn't be your first choice in the area.
Thank |Hands down some of the most creative and complex trails you never knew existed. A LOT of work has clearly gone into creating and cultivating these trails. Plenty of Single and Double Black obstacles, 85% of which you can ride around if you're not comfortable. I wouldn't recommend even coming here if you're not pretty comfortable with roots and rocks throughout 50% of this trail. Over all difficult and a thrill ride start to finish. Two thumbs up
Thank |This place is awesome, one of my favorite places to ride hands down. Be aware that this is not for people just getting into mountain biking. The trails are fun and when facing anything difficult they always have a different route. So you don't have to go over jumps and such if you don't want to.
Thank |Awesome trails. Video here. I wish I could ride everything here. Very Technical. Maybe 1 day!

As others stated, its a very technical trail. There's 3 main trails. One is to your left at the fork at the beginning. That's about 4 miles and it's not too difficult. It loops around to the beginning were it started. The "main" trail starts off with some technical stuff then a little up hill where it gets more technical. There's several drop offs and gaps that can be jumped, and the main trail exits to a service road that goes to the waste treatment plant. Across the service road begins the third trail. This is extremely technical with A LOT of rock gardens and roots. If you have a hard tail I suggest skipping it unless you like rock gardens. This trail is about 5 miles and the hardest part. You can exit at the service roads main gate (there's a trail that goes around the gate). Overall it was fun, I give it a 4/5 because the signage is very poor. I got lost several times and sticking to the main trail is hard if you've never been here before
Thank |My favorite place to ride. Obstacles around every corner and options a plenty! Chose your own adventure. Technically demanding but a great place to improve on new features including skinnies, jumps, short technical climbs and lots of balance work. A great trail for intermediate riders looking to get rowdy.
Thank |very demanding technically, with a lot of options for people who like to add even more danger to their ride. climbs are short and rooty, and with the constant rocks and other obstacles there's a pretty heavy workload. great trail to come work on your bike-handling skills, but can't imagine a beginner having much fun.
Thank |This is a great little course with good mix of tight technical single tracks and obstacles. If you want jumps there are a few that will set you free. A little too much for me but they were well marked with blue options.
It was a great little ride right near South Park area. My only complaint was getting mobbed by silk worms! Beware it's the season.
Thank |Rode these for the first time and it really felt like a test of technical skills. Before this ride I probably would've rated my skills at a C /C. Afterward, a D seems more accurate! I appreciated the challenge and really did identify some weak areas that I need to work on. There was not much flow to this system but that could change with increased trail knowledge and/or skill. Tons of variety and surprises around every turn to keep you on your toes. Tougher workout than expected - good amount of climbs and plenty of technical obstacles that kept me working. Overall a tough, somewhat punishing, course for me but a trail that I'll ride again when I am in town. . . both for fun and for a skills check. Directions posted in review by Seth Teegarden on 7/12/14 were helpful.
Thank |Uber technical with a suprise around every turn. I love the RR crossing. Only negative is trail directions are unclear first time out, take a tour guide with you and I bent my brake rotor on some rocks.
Thank |I Loved this trail! I consider myself a skilled intermediate rider so keep that in perspective for this review. The trail was a little difficult to find but some help from a local rider got me going. To get to the main trails You have to go DOWN Farmbrook DR about 1/4 mile and look for the first LEFT. it quickly (about 25 yards) dead ends into the trail head. The trails are very well kept up and maintained, I was very impressed. It is all very tight, technical single track that put my 29er to its maneuverability limits. I consider myself a skilled intermiatete rider and I made it through the whole trail almost unscathed, well minus the gap jumps - my hard tail just isn't cup out for that (or my skill set). I was in town for a wedding and the trail was literally 1.5 miles from my hotel, but i would have gladly driven several hours to come to it. The only reason i gave it a 4 was for the sole reason that at the end it got a little sketchy on the markings, however this could be chalked up to the fact that I was exhausted and just looking to get finished so my senses were not at their highest.
