Mountain Biking Rock Cut State Park
#19 of 128 mountain bike trails in Illinois
Varied terrain from double track groomed to tight single track. many side trails with log jumps and stream crossings. Lots of variation and the southwest corner of the park especially has some nice drop ins, just don't expect much of a landing area / run out. Trail upkeep and features for MTB are up-kept loosely by local riders it seems.

I90 West from Chicago to I39 North, Exit onto E. Riverside Blvd. heading west. Turn right on Perryville Rd. to Harlem Avenue. Right on Harlem avenue to Park entrance
first time riding Rock Cut today, been wanting to for awhile. Lots of trails, my favorites were southwest of Pierce Lake, where there were more hills, curves, roots, rocks, etc., and in the woods. Some trail links were under a major construction project near the boathouse, but you could still get around it. I agree that the park needs an upgrade to maintenance, but trails were still pretty well marked. Cell phone signal is spotty at best, so make sure you take a pic of the trail guide, as there are many trail spurs and connections you may want to explore.
Thank |great trails, make sure to bring bug repellent
Thank |How could you give this trail a 1-star? It's getting grown-in, I'll admit, and there are some logs that could use some attention from a chainsaw but it's fun, good loops, some fun acceleration and small drops/jumps. It's pretty nice for being so close and accessible Spring-Fall. If things get overgrown, bring your machete to cut 'em back or, better yet, volunteer to help out on the trail crew building the actual trails. We could use some more jumps and techy spots, other than that, enjoy the ride bro and bro-ettes!
Oh, also easy place to park at the campground nearby and doggo-friendly so your furry companion(s) can have some fun too. I think it's a great little spot that could use some love to make it awesome.
Thank |These are the closest trails to me so it pains me to say this but don't waste your time. 90% of the year the trails are overgrown. It takes months or even years to clean up storm damage. When they do actually get to trail maintenance, such as erosion, their solution is sand, feet of sand. Normally I wouldn't mind a little sand but every corner, after every downhill, feet of sand. Combine this with trails being overgrown and it's pretty dangerous. Don't bother coming here if you want any kind of flow
Thank |Rock Cut looks great right now! Trails have never been better. Most everything is cut back. Plenty of trails to explore.
Thank |Fun trails to ride and they are great for conditioning. Not much for terrain as far as hills and obstacles go for mountain biking. Not a whole lot of single track either and this park gets pretty full on the weekends. Tons of parking is available, and the lake is open for swimming during the summer months. Makes for a refreshing swim after a hard day of biking. The paved bike path will take you into Rockford for food options if you get tired of riding in the mud.
Thank |Some pretty good slopes with some sandy sections. Bring bug repellent.
Thank |I ride this trail to get a quick workout but prefer to drive about 35 mins farther to John Muir in Kettle Morain. Parts are shared with equestrian riders so you have to watch for horse poo but not much :) . I believe trail A. Some good rooted and rocky trails for a bit of a challenge. Watch for hikers and other bikers on the downhills that have a lot of brush blocking view. Here is a vid I made of Trail F at Rock Cut: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fc6qR3yDII8
Thank |Made up of many small fun loops. I think it would be beneficial to ride this one with a local rider or riding group. I feel like I missed a lot of the good stuff, but I will definitely good again.
Thank |My wife and I have ridden in Rock Cut several times and found a nice mixture of trails. There are a few that I've even pulled the kids along in the Burley! The south-west corner of the park has some of our favorite and a little more challenging (no Burley here) trails. We love the large park and the multitude of things to do and see in addition to riding.
Thank |It's is illegal to ride RC in this part of season. So I would check back in March.
Thank |I live about 15 miles away and ride at Rock cut as much as possible in the summer. At least once a week and I would always find a new place to explore. Very fun going downhill and then up a hill with the occasional stream crossing and log jumps. Would recommend to any rider that is looking for a day's worth of riding that isn't too hard or too easy.
Thank |Was in the Rockford area with a few hours to kill, so checked the trail out. Was somewhat difficult to determine where the best place to start, a map is a must. Trail was not very difficult but is well maintained, offers some difficulty with roots, rocks and some sandy areas. Just as likely to encounter hikers as bikers. I'm used to single track with more challenges and only allows travel in one direction, so this was an adjustment and prevented faster riding into blind corners.
I'd ride it again if in the area.
Thank |Rock Cut gets 4 stars just because it's big and well taken care of. (23 miles bike trail claimed on web sight, sounds about right) The NE loop is all use trail and just very little hills, good fast riding. Most of the bike trail in S half of park, on all sides of the bigger lake. (google rock Cut brochure find map download pdf to phone) besides the wide connector type trails there is a tun of good single track out around the woods. I liked the hills. Good workouts without too many gut busters, and just a tun of trail. Very networky, with a few little obstacles like log piles. Must return to see what I missed. Lots of people around, I even saw road bikes on some of it.
Thank |Nice singletrack, very nice lake views, multi-use sections to share with hikers, and they even have bike and boat rentals. Very well maintained. Great for cardio rides and a pleasant ride in the woods. I would say that most of it is beginner with no built-up technical features (like log piles, berms, skinnies, drops, etc). The miles of trails are varied enough to make it worth while. The trails are well marked with numbered signs, so if you have a map it is easy to know where you are. I thoroughly enjoyed riding there. I'll be back...
Thank |Some fun singletrack NW of the dam/splillway.
Thank |Rode the trail last weekend. I found a great part of the trail with some good down hills and some challenging parts. Overall is some good single track if you can find it.* Review edited 11/18/2011
Thank |Trails are very up and down, no challanges good work out but boring ride
Thank |Really great place to bike. Varied terrain many trails segmants to choose from. Too much uphill though but its still a great trail.
Thank |Rode the park today an it was in great shape. Fast and dry with minimal mud crossings.
