Mountain Biking Southside Park - Croft State Natural Area
#20 of 115 mountain bike trails in South Carolina
About 25 miles of cross-country style trails. The outer loop is about 12 miles, but multiple loops can be made. Very natural setting with areas of difficulty and excitement for beginner to expert. Trail improvements have been made in recent years, and a few log crossings and other features are in the process of construction.

Take Hwy. 56 south from Spartanburg. About two miles past Camp Croft State Park sign, turn left onto Groce Road. Take this about 1/2 mile to the parking lot.
These trails are worn out, period. The local club SAMBA, needs to reroute old trails or make some new trails. Just a lot of rooty eroded shit with no fun features and no real downhill fun. It doesn't drain well after rain and the vibe in the woods there is just plain freakin creepy. 30 years ago these trails were probably fun, now their worn the fuck out.
Thank |You need to know the area because the maps provided are really bad. Some say mountain bike on one map, when you get to the trail the No Mountain biking badge is displayed.
Thank |Good starter trail with a mix of easy and intermediate trails and conditions.
Thank |They say its intermediate but we had to walk some parts but the trail is so fun. We are going to go back this is definitely a trail I can improve my skills.
Thank |Love this trail! This is probably my favorite Upstate trail since it has a great fun factor. This has something for everyone (except lots of climbing). If you want beginner style trail just stay on the Southside loop that follows the creek - fast, flat, & fun. There are multiple technical areas & tight rooty singletrack, creek crossings, along with some very fun downhill portions. 100% singletrack too. Most of harder technical features have a go around as well. To add more challenge & miles add High & Dry, Lizard & Rock reek trails which all tie into the main Southside loop. I think all total is about 12 miles or more.
Thank |I have been out of mountain biking for a few years and just getting back into it (with a nice new Ghost SLAMR X5 full suspension). This set of trails is perfect if you are just starting out because you can add miles & challenge as your skills improve.
I have always felt that clockwise is best but seemed like most were going counterclockwise
Trail is maintained impeccably! Thanks for the hard work!
Had a few climbs, but it was a fast track with some really nice scenery. Some nice technical parts here and there. Friendly staff.
Thank |Mellow enough for beginners, enough fun for experienced riders. Lots of rooty, natural trails. Love it. Feels like youre out in the middle of nowhere
Thank |short trail with lots of twist and turns and good berms.very well built and maintained.Adding a few more miles and flowing sections and it could be in the top 10 in SC.
Thank |It's been 10 years since I last rode this trail so it felt new to me today. I forget how many tree roots are on the loop. Starting off early, light rain and heavy leaf coverage made the pucker factor climb high. All of the trail was ridable, though I did the perimeter loop leaving out "High and Dry." There are a few technical climbs and some tight cornering which is consistent in this area. On the lower end of the loop the trail runs parallel to an unknown river. This section reminds me of Turky Creek/Wine creek trails, another local trail closer to McCormick county. Last, on HWY56 I stopped to the gas station closest to the trailhead and had the BEST cheeseburger I've had in a long time.
Thank |Run lower presser and get ready for some drop-ins!
My favorite trail in the entire USA. Why? It is beautiful and you can fly on a cross-
Thank |Country bike. No major climbs or serious downhills, but the Stumojumo racecourse is wicked fun because it flows beautifilly. In a nutshell...this trail flows and if you like that, you will enjoy a ride here.
Rode this trail while I was in town visiting the in-laws. It was a blast! Good distance and lots of variety in trail features and difficulty. My favorite parts were the low land area near the river which was fast and smooth, and the last 2 miles which had some technical downhills that you could keep some pretty good speed through. There were quite a few roots, but not too many for the SS rigid to handle. There was a difficult section that had some fun technical obstacles as well. Overall a great ride. The directions were a little off. My truck odometer said the turn to the park was 3 miles past the entrance to Croft. Not sure how much traffic this trail gets. It was in great shape, but I was the only sole out there the entire time. Check it out!!!
Thank |If you are looking for a good 2 hour ride with some terrain changes and a beautiful fast ride through a lush bottom-forest you ought to ride the full loop. There are some washout areas due to the recent storms but I'm finding that the case most everywhere. Its a great place if you have a kid or novice just learning, or you can wind the rubberband a bit tighter and ride hard for a pretty good workout with georgeous scenery.
Thank |I've ridden Southside twice... once in 2004 & today. I can't speak to what amount of maintenance has taken place at Southside as of recent but it does seem to be in need of a little TLC. In all fairness there have been quite a few storms in the area lately & as a result there were a few blow downs & lots of debris on the main loop. Also trail erosion seems to be becoming a bit of a problem in a few areas. If many roots & ruts are not your thing you may find yourself a bit frustrated w/ the ride, however I don't mind them so much even when riding my fully rigid MTB. This trail could be really awesome if some locals would address these issues. However, in spite of some needed maintenance my son & I still enjoyed our time on the trail! There are a few nice ravines & drops to play on & the section of trail that runs in the floodplain was fast & flat w/ beautiful greenery by way of ferns & the like. There were also quite a few nice spots to take a break by the creek & to take in the scenery. Overall I rate SS a three but w/ a little TLC this place could easily be a 4+!
Thank |so i looked and looked for this trail but couldn't find it. maybe some better directions? i would love to ride it. someone help me out!
Thank |I certainly consider myself a capable and true mtbr! I rode this trail yesterday and loved it. NO there aren't jumps and berms but you can't say someone that isn't a mountain biker could ride it.
Thank |Good mix I thought. Pretty fast in places, climbs not long, fun stuff for an old-fart x-country rider.
Great trail. Well marked and maintained. Idaho section technical, rest of loop challenging but not too difficult. Rode in wet conditions today and trail was challenging. Bonus - showers available

Thank |Trail is great. Boris is an idiot!
Thank |I thought this ride provided a good variety of heart pumping climbs and some calculating decents. Some portions can be technical but not overly tough. It's a great ride and well worth the $2 fee.
