Mountain Biking Sycamore Canyon Park

*****   Add a review
#48 of 1,004 mountain bike trails in California
#966 in the world

This area has two "main" loops. You decide what type of ride you are looking for...The North Loop (On Central Ave.) starts as a step climb on both start/finishes. Both directions offer some quick technical section with some small steam crossings. This Northern Loops is only about 5 miles, but you'll spend about 70% climbing.
The Southern Loop Ride (Off Sycamore Canyon) is a bit flatter and offers everything from some technical single track riding to "fire road" sections. There are several short, steep (10% grades) that will challenge you. There are several options to eek out your own loop. I start from behind the new Big 5 warehouse and stay on the east side of the Arroyo. You will have to exit the trail and ride to the "new" warehouse parking lot to pick up the Western Side of the trail. From there, there are many great single tracks and fire roads to keep you busy for a few hours exploring. Best I've found in Riverside...

Getting there
There are two trail heads for this area. From the 215, you'll want to exit on Alesandro. Head West of the Fwy. to first light which is Sycamore Canyon Rd. Turn Right (Chevron on corner). There is a trail head which is now along a fence line to a new warehouse. Beware of where you park, I just received a $100 ticket for "Parking on an unpaved parcel"(?)...look around and you can park at one of the new warehouses... The second "Official" parking area is at the Northern end of the trails. Instead of exiting Alasandro, head to the 60 Fwy towards Riverside. Exit Central and head West. After the second light, you'll see a parking area on the left.

I last rode this in 2006. Great place to night ride in the hotter summer months. Lots of new single track, with a couple of bobsled Arroyo trails to play on. Also added more boulder sections on many sections of the trail. Starting at the Central Avenue parking lot means you'll be doing the heavy climbing while sharing the trails with walkers and dogs. Orient yourself by day, before attempting a night ride. Lots of kangaroo rats, coyote and some rattlers at night.

I wish I had more time to explore this area! Was able to get an hour in after work, and if I lived in this area I would be a regular rider here... an excellent mix of terrain and difficulty

Sycamore Canyon is where I was introduced to mountain biking. The network of trails here is very developed, but almost too developed that you feel like you are more in a park setting than in nature. The park is comprised of mostly double tracks with a main fireroad running towards more of the southern end of the park. There's a bit of everything here from jumps to rocky descents, to climbs. Can be a bit tricky for beginners as there are some very steep, but short inclines. Terrain is fairly rocky and loose at some sections.

Study the map or bring one with you as it is easy to get lost here. Just remember where the major stream crossings are, and you should have no issues with general navigation.

Great day with perfect conditions. All of the rain has soaked in & the trails are in the best shape all year. I turned in 9 miles today with a mixture of single track & fire road. The creek is up, but other than that no mud, just great trails with perfect weather.

I don't know who named this area for the site but this area is more commonly known as the Sycamore Canyon Trails. It is a good collection of trails with pretty much something for everyone including some fun little rock areas to play around in.

Not a bad trail but I guess I expected more based on the other reviews below. There were a couple of nice features but overall the trail didn't seem like anything special. It would have been REALLY nice if the trail was labelled. As silly as it sounds I'm really glad I brought the map from this site as it saved me a lot of time as there are trails crossings everywhere. I'd ride it again but wouldn't go out of my way to ride this trail.

Please take my comments with a grain of salt because I haven't ridden any other trails in the area to compare this trail to. It is also possible that I missed some of the awesome features that others have mentioned as I only rode 14 miles of trail. Once again, some better trail markings would have been helpful. My comments are based on comparing this trail to the trails I usually ride back in the midwest which I would say are more technical.

If it's your first time to this trail I would HIGHLY recommend parking next to the self storage place at Alessandro and Barton rd. or near JensonUSA. This will save you the LONG (but great lung/leg workout) uphill climb to get up the top where the main features of the trail are if you started at the Central Ave trailhead.

Great series of trails. Nice packed sand with some technical rocky areas. The system has a nice flow to it with many options to explore off the main loop. Riverside MTB are lucky to have this place in their backyard.

Excellent trail. There is a lot of trails out here. A little for every level. From easy to difficult. Some really good single track. Jenson USA warehouse is there and lets you park there. Awesome people there in the warehouse. They even hold some nice demo rides there if you catch them. Last weekend was Rocky Mountain Cyclery. Try it out..best I rode in Cali yet!

Today was my first time out in this area and I had a blast. We found all kinds of stuff to ride from narrow single track to some pretty fun downhill runs. We also found a sweat little short course run with all kinds of fun jumps and steep, sharp berms. All in all a nice place to ride where you can pick and choose whatever level of terrain you want to shred.

Great trail(s) for all riders. There are some nice boulder areas for advanced riders, or trails easy enough for all riders. I never really took a particular route, just took whatever route looked fun. Also, a great place to develop mountain biking skills for beginners. You can come back here again and again, and take multiple routes where the difficulty varies.

For Parking: Jenson USA has a "will call" center very close to the trail. If you exit from the 215 S at Eastridge (right before Alessandro) and take a right, go for about half a mile, and jenson will be on your left. They allow mountain bikers to use their parking lot since it brings them good business. They also run MTB groups through I believe the 1st Wednesday of every month. * Review edited 5/13/2011
