This 132km (80 mile) trail is a mellow four day family adventure ride, partly in the back-country. You're in the midst of one of Lonely Planet's top ten regions for tourists, 2014 - you're bound to go home with lots of memories and photos.
The trail starts in Greymouth and goes about 30km down the coast to Kumara, then heads inland and up for 30km, before heading 40km back down to the coast at Hokitika. From there it stays close to the coast for about 30km to Ross.
The trail is very well made and surfaced - you'll see plenty of evidence of it's $9 million cost. There are lots of diversions along the way - it's not an adventure to rush.
Google "West Coast Wilderness Trail" for loads of information about the trail including maps, accommodation, shuttles, and attractions along the way. The i-sites (information centres) in Greymouth, Hokitika and Westport will all help you plan this great-once-in-a-lifetime ride.
About 10,000 people a year enjoy this popular family adventure style ride. It's well serviced by tourism operators so it's easy to organise accommodation, shuttle, bike hire and anything else you need. This trail makes for a great all-weather, all-season holiday.
