Mountain Biking Whites Cr/thomas Cr Loop
#16 of 119 mountain bike trails in Nevada
A great singletrack route in the foothills bordering the Mt Rose Wilderness area. This route utilizes trails up the Whites and Thomas creeks connected by the Dry Pond Connector trail that runs between them, so it can be done in either direction. Both offer nice, not too technical singletrack through the forest along beautiful small creeks. The trail along Whites Cr is a little more technical than the Thomas Cr due to rockier terrain. Both trails do continue on up the mountain past the Dry Pond tr, and look tempting however they soon run past the boundary for the Wilderness area where bikes are not allowed. Signage is great and finding the turn offs to Connector tr going either direction should not be an issue. Along the creeks is just a steady grade, the connector trail has most of the climbing/steep decent (almost 1000 ft). Once away from the creeks the views of the surrounding mountains and all the way across the Reno bowl can be fantastic.
Being so close to town this trail sees a lot of use, this is also a favorite trail of day hikers and trails runners.

From hwy 395 in south Reno take hwy 431 (Mt Rose Hwy) west up the mountain about 3 miles, right where it turns from 4 lanes to 2 take a right (N) on Timberline dr. (If ridden as a loop the Thomas Cr trailhead is the better parking spot as singletrack slightly bypasses Whites Cr TH.) At .5 mile you will see a turn off to a trailhead for Whites Cr. Continue on Timberline for another .7 miles, the road turns to gravel and crosses a small bridge, stay right and park in the paved lot at the top of the hill.
If riding up Thomas Cr; trail starts in SW corner of parking lot, make your way down to the creek and start up. If you wish to ride the opposite direction; ride back down the road towards the Whites Cr TH road, just before the gate take the singletrack that leads off the left side, it crosses back over the road shortly after and follows the creek up.
Fun winter ride! We rented fat bikes and rode the Thomas Creek to Whites Creek loop. All uphill on Thomas Creek to Dry Lake then really fun DH with switchbacks on the way down. I'd say starting from Thomas Creek is the easier way to ride this loop.
Thank |Best trail in Reno proper! Short but sweet! Do the Thomas to Whites loop for a quick 1hr or so ride, or start at the Galena Jones Creek parking area for a nice 1 3/4hr out and back...You're not really supposed to ride on Jones Creek Trail but if you're courteous others probably won't mind.* Review edited 11/3/2011

Thank |Fun trail, climbed up from the Cheveron station. Long climb but mellow. Fun mellow descent back down. Good early season or late season ride when snows on the trails in tahoe.
Thank |I used to ride this trail quite a bit a few years ago when I lived in Reno. Today I was pleasantly surprised to find a couple miles of single track along Whites cr where before we used an old doubletrack road to get up and down here. There is some equestrian activity here also but they tend to take trails higher up the mountain.
