Mountain Biking Hop Brook Lake

  Add a review
#103 of 113 mountain bike trails in Connecticut
#28,509 in the world

This is a multi-use area, and the main MTB trails are primarily XC, fairly wide, with minimal technical areas (for New England) with a few rocks and few roots, and some loose over hard segments. But an unnamed hill just west of the lake provides a tougher climb than first appears, with uneven, steep ramps appearing at the worst times, and changing surfaces from dirt, to pebbles, to small roots and, depending on the season, leaves and branches. Pace yourself or pay for it. Races are held each spring here starting the season and are easy to find online. Bring your climbing legs!

If you cross Rte 63 and head about 200 yards south, there is an unmarked pullout on the east side of the road that can fit about 5 cars. From there you'll see an almost hidden gate that leads to a trail system that heads into the woods and south to Whittemore Glen State Park Scenic Reserve and Larkin State Bridle Trail. These trails see less traffic, and are more trail riding than XC riding, for those seeking that out.

Getting there
From Waterbury, drive a little over 2 miles west on I-84. Take exit 17, turn left (south), go another 1.3 miles on Straits Turnpike (63). Hop Brook Lake Recreation Area will be on your left (east) side. There's a parking lot up top, but if the gate is open, you can drive down into the park itself to larger parking lots.
