This amazing ride among the massive Winding Stair Mountain of Oklahoma starts off with a blazing descent down Bohannon Creek Trail. It's steep but significantly less technical than other trails in the area so speed will come quickly.
Then turn right onto the Choctaw Nation Trail. It will start with technical riding and minor undulation. With time, the undulations will increase into big descents and climbs on smoother trail. Lastly, a steady climb across Winding Stair, the Ouachita Trail, and Oklahoma 1 will bring you to where you need to turn right into the Old Military Road Trail.
During the descent of this overgrown doubletrack, be sure to soak in the history of the area. This road once transported settlers and soldiers west during the 19th century. Supposedly some artifacts still remain along the trail.
Proceed right onto the Boardstand Trail. This trail is a fun, flowy adventure through pines at the base of the mountain. An initial climb leaves you gasping in the beginning, but it eventually starts to undulate like the Choctaw Nation Trail.
Sadly, you'll eventually have to go back up the mountain. To do so, turn right onto the Boardstand Connector. This climb hurts. Badly. 500 vertical feet in less than a mile sucks. The fact that it's on doubletrack does helps though. Luckily, after that, you're done!!
Overall, this amazing loop is well worth it. Great descents, amazing views, and pristine forest make it one to remember. Just remember to be self-sufficient. There's no cell service, it's isolated, and there are bears so come prepared. Good luck!
