The Mount Aspiring Hut track takes you up the wide glacial Matukituki Valley between towering mountain walls towards the jagged peaks near the Main Divide. You'll almost reach the shadow of Mount Aspiring (3033 metres, 9951 feet) - a magnet for mountain climbers. The hut has been their staging post for over a century.
The trail to the hut is an old four wheel drive track that goes up the valley floor without gaining much altitude. It's not difficult riding except for a few short pieces that you'll have to push and there are several styles you'll have to lift your bike over. There are also a few shallow creek crossings. You'll reach the hut in only 10km or about an hour's riding not counting photo stops. There you can savour the grandeur surrounding you till the dive bombing squadrons of sandflies encourage you to get moving again.
The track is very popular with day walkers on weekends and also backpackers and mountaineers. There are toilets at the car park and at the hut.
