Mountain Biking Cinder Path

****   Add a review
#56 of 99 mountain bike trails in Iowa
#7,255 in the world

This is a long out and back from Chariton to Humeston. The trail from Chariton to Derby is 10 miles with a smooth, cinder trail tread and several bridges including one covered bridge. This segment has a thick canopy overhead for the most part.

The trail from Derby to Humeston is 6 miles with a grass tread; some of it thick in places. This segment is much slower going than the segment from Chariton to Derby. There is a Casey's gas station in Humeston if you need to refuel. No services in Derby.

No, it's not singletrack. There is no gnar. No steep climbs. No downhills either. What am I even doing here?

This has not been the year for riding dirt trails in Iowa, or the Midwest in general. The storms have been coming in like clockwork all season and desperation has set in. Time to explore what can be ridden regardless of weather.

The great thing about Cinder Path is the backcountry feel you get from riding on an unpaved trail surface through thick river bottom forests. You won't see any road bikes out here. Might be able to get away with a cross bike but only if its been dry for a week. For what it is, this is a nice place to ride your bike when all other options are off the table or you are tired of riding the paved trails in the Metro area.

I would recommend just the Chariton-Derby out and back and skip the trip to Humeston unless you really need to have that notch in your belt. The grass just sucks the life out of you and that whole segment doesn't have the nice backcountry feel since it runs parallel to highway 65 for a time.
