Mountain Biking Cheboygan State Park

***   Add a review
#185 of 323 mountain bike trails in Michigan
#7,754 in the world

Trail system consists of 4 interconnected loops: red, yellow, black, and green. Red and yellow are inland and have some fun bridges, but are a little bumpy. Appropriate for very new riders. The black loop is completely loose beach sand. The green loop follows the shoreline where you have beautiful views of the water, boats, and a lighthouse. It switches from easily rideable trail to more deep beach sand and some marshy areas.

This is a very different experience from your usual forest trail run! Yes there is sand, but there is a way around some of it: when you get on the green trail just ride the beach (as the trail is practically non-existent). I rode in the afternoon (3pm) when the tide was going out leaving a nice hard sand with light debris... right on the shoreline.. it is beautiful and unique and you probably won't see anyone except for a boat on the lake.. When you get to the end do not try to loop back on the black trail, it is all sand and cannot be ridden.. I recommend doubling back on the green trail riding the shoreline again, it is fantastic.. If you do try to ride the actual green trail (at points you will have to) be careful with short cuts.. there is standing water in that tall dune grass! Also be careful of sand that is too wet/soft on the beach, it may make you flip). Yes it's an adventure, but worth it! Jump on the blue trail after getting off the green, it will take you on a wide, rutty, and mossy ride through some woods.. it will be great! So glad I decided to give this place a try today! If you're not adventerous, you can still do the trail just be prepared to do quite a bit of walking in sand...

Black trail was super sand and we had to walk bikes about 1/8 mile. However green trail was amazing as we rode on shore line near crashing waves. All well marked and maps along the way.
