You can access this trail from the main entrance to the Tipsaw Lake area of the Hoosier National Forest, near St. Croix, IN. Take the main road to the recreation area. Before you get to the entrance station, there is a small parking area to the left where you can park for free. If you continue to the entrance station, you'll have to pay a fee to park in the developed area of the park. Note: You'll need a permit to ride the trails at Tipsaw. It costs $5 and can be purchased at local shops. It is NOT available at the park itself or the trailheads. You can buy one at the gas station about 2 miles or so north of the park. The trailhead also has a list of permit vendors on the back of the trailhead sign.
I didn't like this trail at all. This is really a hiking trail that allows mountain bikes - it's not a trail designed with mountain bikes in mind. When I rode it, there were large standing puddles of water that looked like they never drain. The trail is not well maintained. There are lots of downed trees and other debris. If you want to try it, be ready for a frustrating challenge. The scenery didn't even really make up for the hassle. I would recommend it only if there was nothing else available in the area. It's definitely not a "destination" trail.
| ThankThe trail has good and bad points. Back side of lake is unkept and rough. sometimes muddy. north of the lake has a cemetary and gravel roads. There is a lot of scenery. I use this trail to practice slower technical work on the hazards. Lots of roots and rocks is some areas. quality of trail changes from year to year. this year 2016 has a lot of rose bushes and thorns hanging along backside of lake.
