Mountain Biking Climax Canyon Nature Trail
#153 of 283 mountain bike trails in New Mexico
The trail begins with a short stem that attaches to two connected 1.5 mile loops which can be ridden as a figure 8 or a single outer loop. There's not much mileage, but what is there is challenging. The climbs are steep, the singletrack narrow and the switchbacks very tight. There are plenty of rock slab staircases. Riding the outer trails CCW will likely result in fewer dismounts, but there will be some dismounts either way.

From downtown Raton, go south on 2nd street. At the southern edge of downtown, go west on Apache Ave and follow it until it deadends at the trailhead. If there is a gate closure, park there and ride the short distance of the remaining road to the trailhead.
While this trail is officially open to mountain bikes, it is not recommended by the City of Raton Department of Parks and Recreation due to its design as a hiking trail.
Thank |This is a tougher than average 3.5 miles to be sure. There's nothing death defying, but the combination of grade, rocks, switchbacks, and very narrow trail often lined with all manner of aggressive, pokey things (yucca, prickly pear, and the particularly nasty cholla). The trail is almost all very narrow and body english will be necessary to avoid a lot of the cholla. There are very tight, v-shaped switchbacks that will cause anyone not named 'Hans' to dismount. Many spots on the trail have rock slab staircases, all of which are rideable going down, but many are not rideable going up. Most of the trail is very entertaining, but there are enough disruptive spots (along with the short mileage), to keep this form being a top trail.
