Mountain Biking Chengeltei Mountain North

This network of trails lies in a mostly forested region of about 15 square miles (about 40 square kilometers). There is maybe 40 km of trail here. The trails are organic, grassy and hard packed. There is one trail you can ride pretty much due north (N-NW mostly) that stays pretty high up on the mountain ridge. Or you can drop off on the mountain slopes and side valleys on either side. Most of the main descents are about 500-1300 feet. It is a mile (1.6 km) climb north from the THD to crest the main ridge that runs north and have access to much of the area from the top. You can also head west from the THD and do a couple of different loops in that general direction.

There are many points to start from: (1) off of Zuun Salaa Road, (2) Shargamorit Road (lots of access issues here) and Jigjidiin Road and (3) at the end of Chengeltei Road. I prefer this third option because it is closest to the center of town.
To get to this third option, turn left (west) at the "Doloon Boodal" intersection, and head mostly NW up Chengeltei Road. Travel 6.8 km to the end of the road and THD. Pavement will break at 5.2 km, and then keep going another 1.6 km to a good parking spot.
On this last stretch, stay near or along the tree line on your left until you get to the very last house in back on the dirt road. At this house you will see a fork. The right fork (the more defined dirt road) heads a little east of north and up towards Chengeltei Peak. The left fork (a little less defined dirt road) is the one you want. I runs generally NW. The parking spot is before and just below this last house near a log cabin on the left in the trees. The road levels for a moment here, so it's a good place to park. There is also a trail off to the west from this parking area. It's a lot of fun too and part of the whole system. All the trails in the area are accessible from this point and are mostly north of this trailhead.
