In my opinion, the best way to access the Methodist Mountain trail system is by climbing County Road 110 out of Salida (which technically turns to FS Road #5668). This is a great way to gain elevation (and after a few miles you can finish the climb on the Skull trail). Once you hit the Little Rainbow trail, roll across and then descend Race Track or Lost Cause. Alternatively, if you want to keep climbing, continue onto Little Rainbow Extension then turn around and do Little Rainbow > Race Track.
