Take Southern State Parkway and take Exit 19S for Peninsula Blvd. Entrance will be on right.
For mountain bike enthusiasts living in south western nassau county it can be downright frustrating having to drive 40 minutes each way to get to good singletracks. This brings me to my review of todays maiden voyage from my house(on a bike) to hempstead lake state park. Today it was quite raw. Lots of narrow walking trails with some deadends, downed trees, tons of overgrown thorn bushes and poison ivy signs. Thats the bad. The good is that with a little bit of help from CLIMB i think there is quite a respectable and unique mountain bike trail to be blazed. I would guess there is a good 8-12 miles of trails combined. Half of the trails are right along the lake which makes for some really nice views. There was also a surprising amount of elevation for the south shore(resembled the north shore), but sadly there were almost no trails in the hills. Also of note was the "hill" sections were north of the southern state parkway(the trail connects with an overpass for the parkway at exit 18). Again, with a little bit of work an amazing trail system with a ton of obstacles and elevation(which could spark some east enders to make the journey west) could be forged. I currently have no idea where to begin, but i plan on contacting the folks at CLIMB for advice on how to get a real trail system created. If u go to hempstead do not expect any markers. Its almost impossible to get lost and u have to get a little creative finding your way to and through the trails. For me i was happy to get my mountain bike jonesing for the day without having to drive, just wish it could have been a defined trail.
