Hwy 15 exit Via Rancho and head east. Turn right at Texaco/Chevron stations and find a place to park.
Raptor Ridge is a single track section along the San Pasqual Valley Trail which in turn is a section of the Coast to Crest Trail. The climb from the west up Raptor Ridge is fairly strenuous. Once at the top of climb there is a viewpoint where you can take in a.panoramic view of the Valley. In all likelihood you will see hawks, vultures and maybe even a golden eagle circling around this area; hence the name Raptor Ridge. Descent along the east half of the ridge was fairly easy. There were a few patches of sandy soil that required some good bike handling skills but other than that it was a fun, fast descent. Once at the bottom of Raptor Ridge you can decide to continue on to the end of the San Pasqual Trail (another 4.5 quick miles) or climb back up and descend the west half of the ridge. It feels pretty remote back here so be sure to bring plenty of water, snacks, and your bike repair kit. I ran over some dry thorns and puntured my front tire. I would classify it as an advanced beginner trail.
Thank |Enjoyable singletrack, good workout, good views. Very cold in the valley in the mornings
Thank |9 OAB miles of wide and smooth trail; perfect for raw beginners or families with young children. You come to a kiosk at the 4.5 mile mark where more fit and experienced riders can grind out a 3/4 mile climb. The view and the DH return are ample rewards. At the TH the sign is for "Mule Hill Trail" and all the educational signs along the trail are for the "San Pasqual Valley Agricultural Preserve Trail"........Raptor Ridge sounds cooler though.
Thank |A serious climb out and back, watch for horses.
