Mountain Biking Porcupine Ridge

****   Add a review
#32 of 308 mountain bike trails in Ontario
#1,852 in the world

Trail is maintained by the Porcupine Ridge Mountain Bike Club: http://www.porcupineridge.ca/Home.html . Really, really technical single track! All rock, wood bridges, and roots - definitely a good place for fat tires, 29s, or dual suspension.

All trails are marked and rated with very nice signage, some trails are seriously technical which is a nice change from southern Ontario. Very slow but challenging ride, don't expect to blast downhill railing berms and turns here, most of the riding is slow / choosing a path over insane rocks / bridges / big climbs and steep slow descents over big rock faces. Although it sounds gnarly it is all actual maintained cut trails so there is a 'path' or line to take which is fun!

One trail has the longest wooden bridge I have ever seen, at least 200 feet of skinny bridge riding downhill!

Definitely bring a spare tube if you aren't tubeless as well.

Reopened for 2019 and an amazing technical riding area. Good trail maps posted at every segment head . Mostly dry conditions despite recent rain

    From Porcupine Ridge facebook page.

" Porcupine Ridge trail opening 2018 will be postponed due to a insurance issue. A solution is in the works and we hope to have the trails open sometime in June. Please respect the land owner and stay off trails until further notice."

This is some pretty nasty stuff. Everything here is difficult and even the green-rated trails are nothing for beginners. The trail surface is almost completely roots and rocks so getting any speed is difficult. A lot of the boardwalks and bridges are loose/wobbly and some of rotting boards. Many large pot holes filled with mud, especially in the main trail, and the surface is quite loose. It's also quite overgrown in spots and obviously not ridden much as the trails are covered in pine needles. Definitely don't go here if you're looking for a fast-paced ride; it's a slow, very hard grind with little variation. The signage is quite nice on the trails though with full names, maps, and difficulty ratings, as well as the fact that difficult and easy routes are frequently marked when available with signs (however there still are mandatory bridges, drops, etc. that often are very difficult too).

Just on a side note, I did have a few issues even finding the trail head since there are a lot of parking lots around Santa's Village and the directions given aren't very specific. If you're having any issues:

Off of Muskoka Rd. 15 (coming from 118) turn right into the parking lot just after the cabins (and almost directly across the road from the theme park). There is another parking lot further back to the left where you can find the trailhead :)

I first rode here in '96 and wrecked my frame on the first descent of the first trail. Since then the trails, my bike and my skills have all improved. But the Porcupine ridge trails have improved the most. Stunning, trails. Not for novice riders, but if you love to ride and want to have fun this is as good as it gets in Ontario (or many other places as well). Beyond awesome trails.

Not for the faint hearted, you better bring your "A" game, along with a full basket of cardio and a dual suspension bike for the rocks and roots

Ok, when they say expert, they mean it. I am an advanced endure rider that travels a lot. This trail just kicked my ass completely. Kudo's to those who ride it,its beyond challenging.

Like others have already mentioned, the trails are very technical and it was difficult to get a good flow going. I'd say at least 75% of trail surface is rooted, complimented by bedrock. The trails are marked well but we still ended up going the wrong way on a few of them. If you have a nimble bike, good stamina, and you like to abuse yourself, this will be heaven.

Great place to challenge your skills- tight, twisty, and very technical. There are many man made obstacles such as teeter totters, bridges and drops. Landscape is mainly dirt (incredible amount if roots) an dolling granite. I loved it
