Mountain Biking Avalanche Preserve

****   Add a review
#55 of 323 mountain bike trails in Michigan

Not an overly technical trail, but a definate workout and one that tests your climbing and downhill prowess. Starts out fairly flat with some twists & minor elevation changes for about the first mile or so, then the climb begins. Nice mix of good moderate climbs will get your heartrate up with some short flat sections and a few downhills mixed in. Nothing technical except for a few roots until you get to the top of the hill, then there are one or two short technical challenges. Stop at the top of the hill for the awesome view before tackling the long downhill that is probably the last half mile of the ride. Nothing overly steep, but you will be on the brakes regularly to keep from crashing out on the turns & twists.

There are bathrooms here, fatbiking is allowed in the winter (Trails are groomed), and night riding is allowed.

You will not like the climb but the descent is the pay off! Super fun after you get to the overlook. Actually the climb isn't that bad

Nice 45 minute workout. Pretty well maintained, its not one of those that would hold up without proper maintaince. A few different routes to take up and down. There is one spot that has some smooth kickers and high banks, nicely done. Can pump alot of speed on the downgrades. The edges of the path get real soft in spots, so dont fall off. Careful blasting downhill due to others coming up on this multidirectional trail. The climbs will get yourheart pumping and legs burning.
    Good trail

Generally in decent shape. There are a few trees down from a wind storm last week. Tough to follow in a few spots because of leaves but plenty rideable and very fun. Great views at the top. Getting down is a bit challenging but there is an easy path out that takes you to the parking lot.

I rode this on June 24, 2015 and found it to be a great challenge and a great ride. I managed to stretch the listed 4.2 miles into about 7 due to some backtracking and a couple missed turns... Definitely a workout. Several nice views scenery-wise, with the view of Lake Charlevoix from the top being the highlight of the trip. It's a loop and such, but the markings could be a lot better! There is a disc golf course here, too, and it must be one of the most difficult courses ever! Climbs up part of the trail...

I only got about 10 minutes in before my derailluer hanger broke. However in the mean time this is a loop. About 6 miles with an outstanding view of Lake Charlevoix (as I have been told). I found the trail to have a lot of twists that keeps you on your toes and the brakes covered. I did not get to the hard climbs, however I am sure there are there. This trail does not flow as nice as say the Shingle Mill Pathway, however it was exciting to run. The mountain trail overlaps the hiking trail and a two track. And the trail is not marked well. If you think the trail is to wide, it is and you have go back. There is a short loop that doubles back and you can easily make a right and cut it off. Like I said it is not marked well. to where I got there was good hardpack, with a few spots of sand that was easy to cross. There are roots as well. When i get a chance again I will rewrite the review to include my thoughts on the rest of it.
