Mountain Biking Dunning's Spring
#29 of 99 mountain bike trails in Iowa
No matter where you start, be prepared to climb. Rocks, roots, and hills.
Width of the trail varies from 12 inches and smaller. These trails have every
type of climb you want. Short, steep climbs; long, gradual climbs; long,
steep climbs. The only flat-ish trail is Captain's at the top of the trail but it
has plenty of log piles to make it enjoyable.
Recommended route: The Luge to Backside to Ice Cave/Dunning Springs to
Wold's Peak to Boa to Captain's to Mother's Day (hit Upper, Middle, and
Lower). You will finish near the top of the hill. Take Boa or Backside/one of
it's off-shoots to get down. Total length is around 5-6 miles.

From downtown in Decorah take College Drive to Quarry Street/Ice Cave
Road. There are two main parking lots for this section. The first is on the
right, directly across the entrance to Dunning's Springs. The second parking
lot is about 1 mile further down the road, at the four-way stop. The River
trailhead is directly east of the first parking lot, all other trailheads are on
the north side of Quarry Street/Ice Cave Road. The River trail is a great
warm up or just ride on the road towards the four-way stop. Be sure to pick
up a map at the bike store on College Drive (Decorah Bicycles)
2.5 Is the real review....Potential oozes at this place,
but complete lack of signage...sure BOA has some, but when you have to stop every 100-300 yards to look at your map again to see which trails you are crossing it becomes to much....finish marking your trails...for locals sure it is fun and you figure out, eventually where to ride, but as a tourist that did a bunch or research and even tried to follow the suggested route listed above..i was over it 2 miles in ..not because it was boring...it was not, not because it wasnt senic ...it was, but strictly due to chaos of trails with no signage....booooo!!
could be the best riding in iowa but it is far from that as is....i would love to support a drive to finish signage!! Please for the love of growing singletrack in IOWA!!
| ThankThe Decorah mountain bike trail system as a whole is awesome. The Dunnings Springs trails were great. The Luge was one of the ones I remember. It had rained the day before I was there but luckily the trails were hard packed and unaffected other than the abundant rocks and roots were a bit slick. Challenging and fun!
| ThankGreat single track. A brutal climb starts it, but once at the top, it's a lot of fun. Depending on your route, you may have to make the climb twice. Trail is very narrow at spots, a few tight turns, and some nice log piles to cross at the top. Off-camber turns and trails with rocks and roots in many places.
