Mountain Biking Gateway Loop
#156 of 417 mountain bike trails in Arizona
The trailhead has water, bathrooms, etc. The trail starts off shared with other short walking trails and such, then quickly becomes a steep and rocky ascent. The climb is challenging with the steepness and rock gardens all along the path. Other linked trails are the Tom's Thumb trail and the Wingate Pass and Bell Pass trails.

From North Phoenix, Take Bell Road east from AZ-101; go north on E. Thompson Peak Parkway; the entrance to the park will be a mile or so up the road on the right. "McDowell Sonoran Preserve"
Perhaps this Trail (as well as Wingate Pass) has changed significantly over time with erosion, there appears to be little to no sign of maintenance. As a result, these trails appear to me to have become (very heavily used) hiking trails. Unless you are an elite uphill technical rider, I'd stay away as a mountain biker. Try it if you like, but a miserable experience is a real possibility. So many wonderful Phoenix area trails, including gobs of technical ones, why bother with this?!
Thank |First timer on this trail. Took portions of 104th, Levee, Paradise, Gateway, and Quartz and it was fantastic. Really good mix of flats, hills, steep inclines/descents, in and out of washes...A couple of nice viewpoints as well looking back over the city. Most of the tracks from 104th to Paradise were doubletrack, but changed to singles once you hit Gateway. Great run
