Mountain Biking Steeplechase Loop

****   Add a review
#54 of 403 mountain bike trails in Georgia
#1,394 in the world

The Steeplechase loop is the larger and lightly easier loop of the two at GIHP. Access is found directly past the parking lot. Head north on the trail and follow the signs. Most people ride the loop counter clockwise but it can be ridden in both directions. Ride it a high speeds and you'll quickly gain an appreciation of why this site was chosen for the 1996 Olympics. This one will really get your lungs working. Parts are semi-technical but nothing that an intermediate rider couldn't handle. For more technical riding hit up the Granite loop on the other side of the road. Races are scheduled in the area on a semi regular basis. Stay off the horse trails and remember your riding etiquette in case you do run across them. Bike riders yeild to EVERYONE.

This trail is always fun with it's quick little down and ups that allow you to get going pretty fast. There are some opportunities for a bit of air as well (rollers and erosion on the backside of roots). It can be quite bumpy though so a cushy bike is nice to have, but not required. I definitely recommend checking it out.

I think this is one of the better trails in the area. Has a mix of everything. Be prepared to scare off some of the wildlife with you speed. I got to a max speed of about 23mph. Not to challenging but worth the ride. I came from three hours away to make it happen. The trail is well maintained. They had just resurfaced but a half a mile of the trail. Make sure you make a donation to help the upkeep of the trail.

Tell you the truth people aren't screaming about this place and I went just to check it off the list and was blown away. This is great single track with natural obstacles that have you challenged through out the trails. Two trails, steeple chase side is under 7 miles and has a couple of down hills that scream. Good wood bridges, signs are fine, and great drop offs in the turns from natural features. The granite side is crazy hard with a couple of hills that are nasty. You can tell this was built before taking into account full use of terrain, so the trails go up and down the mountain on this side.

Flowy fun singletrack, pretty basic but you can build a ton of speed!

The trail was in great shape. Looks like there has been work done lately. I'm from out of town so I like a well marked trail and this one was. Lots of fun and flowing down hills. Some jumps but nothing too technical. However 2 grinds past the 1/2 way point really tested my legs and lungs. I really love the way everything flows. I will be back with friends from SC. The downhills are really set up well for speed. Lots of fun!!!

This is a pretty tough little loop. Starts with a rolling section of trail to get you warmed up. Throws a couple short and steep climbs in there to keep you on your toes.

The trails are on the sandy side and tend to drain very well. Great place for night riding.

If you're coming from a distance, it's a good idea to check the Georgia International Horse Park's website: http://www.georgiahorsepark.com/

Sometimes there are events that close the trails. I found out the hard way when I drove there last year and they were having cross-country running state champs!

Very fun trail. Challenging if you are new to mountain biking. Just watch out to make sure you stay on the MTB and not the horse trail.

I rode this yesterday (Jan 19, 2014) with another adult and 5 kids ages 8 - 14. We all had a blast. While I do ride the Horse Park regularly I wanted to provide this note for parents. If you are taking your kids to ride bikes at the GIHP you should consider taking kids on their first trip to the Steeplechase side first. Definitely easier than the granite side. Even at that.....warn them that the downhills are steep and that they should "use their back brakes and lean back" when descending. : )

The trail right now is a bit out of sorts from what I've seen over the years. The logging is a shame and the trails have been in better shape but it's still my "home track" and I love it. Everytime I go somewhere else I compare it to the GIHP.

The trail is A LOT of fun. One of the best trails I've been on in terms of fun, and I've been on quite a few. It does however need some work done to it as some of the downhills are a bit worn out. This trail has serious flow, and it helps if you have a nice FS bike, though my sister even loved it on her hardtail. I really want to do it again. Also, they cut down a lot of trees, but I actually find it kind of cool. But I can definitely see why others are angered by it. If you're anywhere near it I definitely suggest going. Sadly, I live about 2 hours away.

Edit: I rode it on the 24th of February during the Expo and it was super muddy. It's probably going to be pretty torn up for a while.

Sweetest downhills this close to Atlanta. Used to be my favorite trail and hopefully it will be restored to it's previous state soon since it was destroyed by loggers.

I was really surprised to find out that this was the "easy" side. Don't get me wrong, it isn't too difficult, but there are plenty of steep, punchy climbs, steep drops, fast turns, LOTS of roots, rocks, and drop offs. Despite the moderate technical challenge this trail still packs some serious flow. I rode this section twice on my trip here.

Park in the lot across from the golf club. The trail is well marked, so you won't have a problem finding your way back. I can tell the trail was once very flowy, but erosion has revealed countless roots on all the downhills, causing you to have to break suddenly and kill your momentum. It was a good ride, but nothing memorable.

There seems to have been a few reroutes to this trail since the last time I was here and they fit the trail very well.. The new log crossing is pretty cool, too. As always, a great ride.

Just to clarify. You are only supposed to ride the trail in one direction and that is counter clockwise.* Review edited 10/12/2010
