Mountain Biking Deep Step Loop
#14 of 115 mountain bike trails in South Carolina
Deep Step is a 5 mile trail that circles Deepstep Rd and also serves as a way to connect the northern loops of Tower and Big Rock without having to ride 3 miles of pavement. Around the halfway point a connector trail branches off and heads towards FS 661. Deep Step has the great flow that everyone has become accustomed to at FATS and it won't let you down. Smooth, flowy, fast, and easy as pie but VERY fun even for an advanced rider. Don't miss out on this one.

From I-20 near Augusta, GA take SC Exit 1 (SC 230). Head north on SC 230 for about 5 miles. Turn left on Woodlawn Rd. Go approx. 4 miles, trailhead parking area is on the left.
Such a great trail. The flow, the rollers, the excellent trail design...as with the rest of FATS it's hard not to have fun here. And the trail is in amazing shape right now (though it pretty much always is).
Thank |This trail is really fun! Fast Flowy downs with many opportunities to launch yourself into some large pine trees. Keep in mind what goes down must go up. This trail does have some climbing involved. Nothing to serious. But will get your heat rate up a little. My favorite trail at fats!
Thank |Best trail system in the area. Worth the trip. I will be back to ride the other trails!!!
Thank |Great downs, fast flowing jumps etc. Wha goes down though has to go back up. Climbs aren't to bad though.
Thank |Nice climbs for fats, the connection from the main trailhead is a road ride although anice climb on the dirt road
Thank |Traveled from Maryland for the week to ride these trails. Well maintained and thought out trail system. Wear glasses as the saved my eyes many times in the pine forest areas. Not very technical and no dabs for me except at intersections. No water crossings and when I was there dry conditions with pine needles comforting my ride.
Thank |Used as a connector to the northern trails.

A bit of a tougher loop at fats, but its not unsurmountable. i'm on year 2 of my mountain biking, and like some others, i did come out of the saddle 2 times on my first trip here. being unfamiliar, i hesitated to bomb the trail, so at times i didnt carry enough momentum..but it was a good mix of climbing and technical areas, with the rewarding downhills that are expected out there. My new favorite trail at FATS.
Thank |Another awesome trail at FATS, I must say, I really love this place!!
Thank |Just got home from riding this trail and I'm beat:) This is the first of the F.A.T.S. trail I've ridden and I just gotta say what a blast it was!!! I must admit to coming outta the saddle a few times on some of the climbs but that's mostly due to poor form and the fact that I'm a noob:) I'm so stoked to have such a great trail system so close to home!!! I will be back soon to ride the other loops!
Thank |Beautiful fast, flowy FATS singletrack!
Thank |I have a love/hate relationship with Deep Step. Love it when it is my first loop[ at FATS, hate it (as I am sucking wind) when I have done a few other loops first. Fun trail, fast decents with som steep up hill sections. believe it flows better going counter clockwise.
Thank |IMO, the most technically challenging trail in the FATS system, but that's not really saying a lot. Still, Deep step had more roots and rocks than I remember on any of the other loops. It's not much of an aerobic challenge unless you are pinning it the whole way around but there are a few short climbs thrown in for good measure. This is the "link" trail between the southern trail and the northern trails of Big Rock and Tower in case you decide to park in the southern parking lot. Keep an eye out for on-comming riders as this trail seems to get ridden in both directions pretty frequently. Great flow much like the other trails at FATS. Enjoy.
