Mountain Biking West Ashley Greenway
#61 of 115 mountain bike trails in South Carolina
Although flat and easy, the 10.5-mile, out-and-back West Ashley Greenway is a gem of a trail in the southwest part of Charleston. This 100-foot wide, mostly hard-packed dirt corridor is a pleasant greenway that starts at a residential and commercial area, then parallels US 17 past neighborhoods, schools, parks, and a marsh before reaching Johns Island and the turn-around point.

From downtown Charleston, drive west on US 17 and cross the Ashley River. About half-mile after the bridge, turn left onto Folly Road (SC 171). At the second light, turn right into South Windermere Shopping Center. You can begin the trail behind the center on the right.
Giving a 3 review since the trail was closed and construction crews were on it. Was a little hard to find from the parking lot, you need to cross the street and its behind a strip mall
Thank |Flat rail trail that is part paved part gravel/dirt. The paved part goes through several neighborhoods.
Thank |Great ride, for Sprint training.
Thank |I went to West Ashley Greenway because I was in Charleston for a few days. I brought my bike hoping to get to ride. Well Marrington and Wanamaker were closed because it was too wet. So I decided to go ride the greenway. It was paved for the first third of the ride, but after that it was dirt. It is a rail bed and wasn't wet except in a few spots. I enjoyed riding and was glad I did it. I would go to the other trails first, but this one will do if the others are closed.
Thank |Flat rail trail with too many stops, but it is in town and great for a quick pedal if you just want to get out on the bike.
Thank |Too many stops but other than that good for a quick workout.
Thank |Great for a spin with family or a date. Long flat ride with some good SC scenery. I reccomend Marrington if you're looking for some good fun singletrack.
Thank |The trail is basically a running trail on grass along a river dike. Nice for a leisurely stroll
Thank |The West Ashley Greenway is essentially a flat rail-trail that once you leave the residential area from the starting point at the South Windermere Shopping Center you'll find the scenery more enjoyable as you past through the open marshlands. Great trail for beginners, families w/ kids & for those who just want to go out & blast away the miles!
