Mountain Biking Meat Grinder

#66 of 283 mountain bike trails in New Mexico
#4,824 in the world

Sustained climb over sometimes rocky, ok OFTEN, rocky trail. Beginner + rated I would say. After the climb turn north-northeast for a fairly fast short decent. At a junction if you keep going straight you run into Tight Rope, a trail aptly named for a couple sections. Turn left at this junction to ride back to the dirt road. You will recognize that you passed this spot where the trail meets the road on your first leg of the journey. Turn right to go back to the car. Turn around and climb the hill and turn left for Tight Rope or turn left and explore a plethora of trails. All beginner to intermediate only. I haven't found or heard of any difficult, advanced or expert trails in this network.

Getting there
I-25 approx 20 miles north of Albuquerque take exit 242 and head east on Hwy 165 for approx 3 miles. There are two parking areas the road between which forms an easy ride in itself. Take the eastern most turn off and park there to ride some of the dirt road or follow around until a left spur leads to a vault toilet and more parking (N35 16.745 / W106 28.708). There are actually plenty of places to park but this gives a little let warm up then a swift downhill on the dirt road. Turn off the road (N35 16.706 W106 29.267) and follow the trail under the powerlines until you come to a left spur. Hanging in the juniper tree you will see a sign that says "Meat Grinder." (N35 16.556 W106 29.494).
