This is a popular and highly used trail that connects the community of Bellingham with various recreational areas south of town. Granting access to Chuckanut mountain trails, Larrabee State Park (campground & beach access) and the D.N.R. trail systems farther south this trail is well maintained and signed. Built on a century old rail bed a lot of the trail is relatively flat or of light grade, there are however places where it has been re-routed and bridges taken out that make for steeper grades or more challenging terrain. Some of it is improved surface and some of it is natural. The first couple miles run through several parks in town and then the trail runs south along a hillside above Chuckanut Dr through thick forest that occasionally give way to grant beautiful views of Puget Sound. It crosses private land a couple times and runs close to a few residences in a couple places, please be courteous in order to keep this trail open for all to use in the future.

The northern end of this trail is at Donovan Dr at the waterfront near the Alaska Ferry terminal (from here you can connect up with the Coastal tr, that follows the coast 2 miles farther north). Another main access point is at the Rotary Park TH on Fairhaven Parkway. The trail can be accessed from over a dozen points along its route as it goes through various parks and intersects other trails. The southern end is at the parking lot for the Clayton Beach Trailhead on Chuckanut Dr (Highway 11).

Good beginner trail. Wide, smooth singletrack (plus). Family friendly trail that provides some great view of the bay. Some climbing if you do the entire OAB.
