A blue car parked on a gravel lot with green bushes and trees in the background. A green trash bin is nearby, and there is a sign indicating no parking. The sky is clear with a few clouds. The Whoops mountain bike trail.

Mountain Biking The Whoops

****   Add a review
#32 of 283 mountain bike trails in New Mexico
#2,159 in the world

The Whoops is a compilation of 3 trails in the Glade Run Trails area North of Farmington, NM. The area is criss crossed with many interesting trails and this is a fun, 9-mile, figure 8. It includes parts of the famous “Road Apple Trail. It rolls through the Pinon Pines and is very single speed friendly. The first 3 miles (Kinsey Trail) and the last 3 miles (Rigor Mortis Trail) are parallel to each other but are actually separate trails. There are lots of spur trails so use you odometer to watch for the turns you want to take.
From the trailhead, ride through opening in the pipe fence and stay on the trail to the right (Kinsey Trail). @ 2.3 miles, (waypoint A) ignore spur on the left (you will turn here coming back). @ In aprox 50 yards (waypoint B) take the fork left. @ 3.7 miles, (waypoint C) take the fork to the right and start down the whoops! @ 4.2 miles, head left on the dirt road for aprox 100 yards and look for the trail on the right (waypoint D). @ 5.4 miles, take the right fork (waypoint E). @ 6.6 miles you will arrive back at waypoint B and turn left. You will be backtracking on this section for aprox 50 yards and turn onto the spur on your right (waypoint A). Follow this parallel trail (Rigor Mortis Trail) back to trailhead @ 9.0 miles. These trails are usually rideable most of the winter months.

Fun trail to ride. You do have to pay close attention to the route and mileage so you stay on the right path. While I was riding there was actually someone remarking the trail and it really helped when I rode where he had already marked. As far as the trail is concerned it is really a easy nontechnical trail but is a lot of fun. Very smooth and has good flow. Many other trails to explore around here too just not enough time or air left in the tire after this ride.

Snowy/Muddy. Would be a good fat bike trail until it dries out this spring.

As stated in the description this is a loop in a much larger system. Rode 20 miles, and maybe hit a 3rd of the trails. Trails are like a giant buffed pump track. Mostly rolling single track with only one long climb. Some of the trails are used by motto's (ATV are not allowed) making for even bigger whoops and bermed turns. Overall a very fast fun trail. Trail is suitable for beginners, ride it fast, and it becomes a whole different animal.
