Mountain Biking Blue Mound State Park
#37 of 388 mountain bike trails in Wisconsin
The trail is great for those with at least a little experience handling obstacles such as rocks and logs, as it is full of them. The really nice thing about this trail is it starts easy and gets progressively more challenging throughout its length. If you're a beginner, you can turn off and climb out or repeat the easy and/or intermediate sections. If you're more skilled (or hard headed) you get a break before the rough stuff the next time around. I've replaced my rear triangle, dérailleur, tires (to say nothing of tubes), etc. because of this trail; it will beat you and your bike up.

Well maintained old school trail. Straight up climbs and descents make this a great place to ride if you want to hate you legs or brakes. This place could be an amazing trail system if they were to cut trail using modern layouts. Lots of technical rock and root sections begging to be put to better use. When the trail isn't going straight up or down it goes straight sideways making even side hill riding boring. Don't waste your time and money as we have much better trail systems in the Midwest.
Thank |Not crazy about this place . I was lucky to get out of here with no flats or mechanicals. Lots of rocks roots and erosion that makes a couple of the climbs technical and difficult. Lots of rocks here to avoid or rollover .. lots of roots not much flow
Thank |The 4-star rating I'm giving this trail is in relation to Wisconsin-area trails, so take that with a grain of salt. Overall I thought this was a pretty entertaining trail system with some great diversity, but would I travel far to get here? Nah.
Thank |This is not the place to take a beginner unless you don't want them to pursue mountain biking. Wait a few years and until you've conquered all other nearby trails before venturing here. I consider my skills advanced, and this was challenging. There are some longer climbs which leave you sucking air, and then the rocks really get going! I would guess everything here is ride-able, but there were a couple rocks I didn't attempt, and several that I did, that I had to step down midway through. This is hard, technical, rocky terrain. It was easy to follow the loop (almost 11 miles). If I lived closer, it is definitely somewhere I'd look to try and conquer, and develop my skills. You have to be in the right sort of mood to ride this. You need to focus and stay in mentally 100% of the time. If you want to relax and flow, this is not the place! Also, these take a really long time to dry out, so unless we're in a drought, it's probably worth calling the park office to make sure they're open.
Thank |WOW! The variety satisfies every itch one might have on a mountain bike ride. There are loose descents, long climbs, switch-backy descents, straight-down-the-mountain descents, flat spots, technical, smooth and everything in between! Although these trails are extremely technical, they can be done on a hardtail with a little finesse. The views are amazing for Wisconsin as well! Enjoy (you won't be disappointed)!
Thank |There is no doubt about it, these trails are technical and difficult. The views you get from the upper regions of Blue Mound State park are amazing though! Some of the trails are in decent shape, but it is apparent that the maintenance has been lacking in the last few years. The exposed sharp rocks and washed out sections make you want to bring hiking boots.
Thank |All I could think about when I was riding here was what the One reviewer had said "punishing" ......wish that I were in a little better shape for this one. Really gotta be on your game. You got to ride it like it is ....hard!
Thank |First time riding here. Not overly impressed with overload. Extremely rocky and several "oh hell no" moments on some of the climbs. Very poor signage, made me wonder if I was going the wrong way with the way some of the climbs were. No rhythm. Punishing climbs were answered with punishing downhill segments that left you with no momentum to flow into the next section. I'll stick to Alpine Valley, Muir, Emma, and Alpha. Way better trails for way less travel.
Thank |The trails are awesome, well-maintained, overall a great mix of technical and aerobic workout if you consider everything the system has to offer. The BMSP trail stewards of Capital Off Road Pathfinders, the local IMBA chapter, take good care of these trails and are constantly improving them.
Thank |I drove an hour to check this place out. Was not disappointed. No major downhills or up hills but trails are loaded with rocks and tree roots that will make your teeth rattle and numb your arms hanging on to the bars. Do bring spare tubes and first aid kit. My bike and I happened to come out unscathed but surprised I didn't blow a tire pinching in rocks. If you do spill there is a good chance of getting cut. I was riding on full suspension bike and not sure I would even try my hard tail. Did all the single tracks in couple hours, Overload was the best with some decent up and down switch backs. thumbs up from me! Worth the drive but remember if you don't have a WI state park tag its going to cost to get in park and plus a trail fee as well.
Thank |Like technical trails? If yes then you will really enjoy blue mound. A few grueling climbs on overload, other than that it's all tech with little climbing/decending. Really enjoyed Holy schist for the challenge that it provided. haha to the comment on bringing bandages...my girlfriend ended up with a bandaid stuck to her tire :D on the home stretch trail there is a dope rock launch on the left side of trail(on a moderate downhill after the last climb)...bust some sweet air and crack a cold one with a smile at the end of the ride!
Thank |Trail is a challange, rocks everywhere some
Thank |Make sure to check out the Over Lode Trail on the east side of the park. SWEET RIDE AND FAST!!!
Thank |This trail is a favorite of mine. WORBA has added several new trails and they are all just as technical and tough as the originals. The creek bottoms are extremely rocky and I have dumped the bike numerous times if I don't have enough speed going into it. Awesome trails!
Thank |Decent trail for both the moderately experienced and for the novice as there are two distinct sets of trails you can ride. One is the basic "I just cut the grass" fast trail with lots of elevation and speed and the other is the WORBA singletrack with good roots, lots of rough rocks, stream crossings (although it was bone dry this week), and enough elevation to make your muscles sore but not enough to make the determined MTB walk. Worth the trip from southern Wisconsin but keep in mind there is a $4 daily trail pass fee and a $7 in state, $10 out-of-state park pass fee.
Thank |been a long time since I rode there but from what I can remember it is just an absolutely awesome set of trails. i was rather green at the time and didn't have the best bike in the world but I made it work. Over all just and awesome set of trails.
