Mountain Biking Ginny Trail

****   Add a review
#180 of 1,392 mountain bike trails in Colorado
#1,297 in the world

This trail takes you from the parking lot at about 5500' through the Bobcat Gulch Fire area of 2000 and up to the west ridge topping out at about 7000'. The only turn you need to watch for is .67 miles into the ride. At this point you can decide to take the technical singletrack uphill (left - towards the Mahoney Park sign) or the straight to the Powerline Trail (road). This trail will challenge your technical skills as you climb thru the burn area. There are many hairpin turns with technical moves to enjoy. The descent is fast and fun. You can not descend via the Powerline trail (but who would want to!!)

Getting there
Take Harmony Road thru town (exit 265 off I-25) past the Taft Hill Road intersection. At this point Harmony becomes CR 38E. Continue past Horsetooth reservoir and Horsetooth Mountain Park until you get into Masonville. Turn left at the Masonville Mercantile (CR27). Take a quick right (only about 1/2 mile down) on CR 32C - marked for the Bobcat Ridge Natural Area. Stay left and continue up the road to a large parking area with facilities. The Ginny Trail starts on the left hand side thru the fence.

Great technical climbing and descending. Not for those looking for flowing singletrack and high speeds. You'll find amazing scenery and a challenging technical ride on this route. Fitness-wise it's very doable. Technically it will challenge even very adept riders in some places. Take note that the entire route is open to the elements (no tree cover), so plan on an early morning or a cool day unless you love the heat.

Rode for the first time yesterday evening. No people, only turkey and deer. Up power line and down Ginny. What a blast! As the tech bits are few and far between, I don't see the black diamond rating. Would recommend.

Technical trail with a step climb. I rode up powetline road. Which in spots is very step, loose , and rocky. Definitely hike a bike stuff. At least for me and the two other guys I saw heading up. Scenic views and an interesting landscape with the burn area. Cool rock formations that are part of the trail. On the way down Ginny trail again lots of loose rocks making for a pretty challenging decent. I saw one guy eat it and another guy who looked to be struggling on the way down. I would say this trail has much flow but definitely very technical. The trail feels more like a rocky hiking trail as opposed to a bike trail. I drove from Denver and I would say it probably wasn't worth the drive unless you love loose and very rocky terrain or you're going this way anyway. One thing that was nice was I didn't see hardly any hikers on a Sunday so that was nice. Gave it a 4 star simply because it's pretty much impossible to ride up in some spots and the lack of fun factor on the way down. I rode it on a 160mm trek slash.

Going up the Ginny was very long and steep. When I finally reached the top it was raining and I wanted a quick way down so I took the Powerline trail back down. I'm not sure why they don't want bikers going down. It was pretty fast, wide, and fun. Lots of loose rocks, but I thought it was fun. It took around 3 hours to get to the top and probably a half hour on the way down. I would recommend going up the Powerline trail and down the Ginny. It would be an easier climb and a fun technical ride down!

I took Ginny to the top with my Crave hardtail. It was a very good climb,1700ft ele. according to Strava. At the top was rewarded with awesome views, everything was green and flowering (well, except for the dead trees from the burn). I ended up walking my bike over some of the boulders. There is definitely some tech there, not as much as the east leg of Laughing Horse, but close. There are a couple man-made features to test your skill on as well. I was running out of daylight so I took Powerline down and met a doe and some bunnies. Found out at the bottom that Powerline is supposed to be uphill only... oops. 2hr roundtrip.

Great techy climb and a fairly challenging downhill. Really bumpy on a hard tail but no complaints, just a challenging ride.

Sick trail. Not as technical as some people whine about below. Due to my own stupidity, I rode it with clipless pedals, without clip shoes. Real smart. But, that shows it's not as technical as it's made out to be, it's actually a great amount technical. The bottom is a bit loose and it gets more techie when you get higher up, but pretty much all rideable (even with platform shoes on clipless pedals). You can get screaming coming down, windy fun singletrack with a nice element of technicality. There's also a bunch of skinnies that are a great way to mix it up, features that the Front Range is sorely lacking. Didn't see a single other person on the trail, and up top you've got beautiful views. Highly recommended trail.

long rocky uphill with slow rocky descent. huge climb for no reward...... several trestles built but no speed allowed because of terrain. wouldn't recommend unless you like long slow hot uphill rides

This was my first ride near FoCo and I think it my be my favorite descent on the front range. Get to lay the bike over through sweet turns all the way down, has rocky spots with fun tech moves, plus a few skinnies keep things interesting. Hint: don't take the Power Line trail up unless you hate yourself; nothing but steep and loose rocks and sand.

Awesome trail, Extremely hard climb but ends with an epic down hill. Light foot traffic. I recommend riding up the power line road then dropping down Ginny trail, makes for an great ride!

Amazing trail! My favorite in the Fort Collins area. I love it because the technical challenge is just at the limit of my abilities. Incredibly fun going down. Amazing views from the top. Be prepared for a workout. This trail is not for beginners!

Anyone not liking this trail must not like or be very good at technical rocky stuff. You can also grinf up Powerline "Road" and then ride the valley up to the top of the ridge before the amazingly fun descent. Sure the DH only lasts 15-20 minutes but it is a TON of fun. There have been recent additions of optional log bridges to challenge anyone who dares. RIDE THIS TRAIL! The scenery may not be the best on the trail (site of the Bobcat Ridge fire in summer of 2000) but at the top of ridge you have views into RMNP - beautiful.

Ride up the Ginny. Turn around and ride back.
Steady climb from the trailhead all the way to the top. You can then play around along the top of the ridge. The ride down is a blast!
Dirt singletrack, with bursts of rocky technical obstacles.
It's better riding than HTMP, parking is free, and the traffic is very light.
Seems wierd that there are trees down all over the place, and you never have to ride over one.
    Watch the videos.

This trail is amazing. Anybody who give it a low rating needs to spend more time in the saddle learning how to ride technical stuff. As soon as you start to downhill the fun begins. Tight turns, techy rock gardens, short steep climbs, fast open single track... What more could you want?

This trail was awful. Very rocky single track consisting of an irregular steep climb to the top and a cautious but short decent. Several areas at the upper level were hike-n-bike. All vegetation has been burned out by wildfire leaving a not so nice scenery. There are to many great trails in Colorado to waste your time with this one. If you're in the Ft. Collins area try Hewlett or Dadd Gulch.

This trail is fantastic. The downhill is amazing, however, you certainly have to earn it with the climb!
