Mountain Biking Perk Canyon
#38 of 283 mountain bike trails in New Mexico
Perk Canyon is perfect for beginning riders, yet still big fun for the hardcore rider. The first few twists and turns are challenging, but the ride down is well worth the effort. Winding and climbing, this favorite of locals and tourists will enchant you. One minute you're in town and the next, you're deep in the forest. It climbs and jogs, crisscrosses a stream several times, twists and turns, and occasionally opens to beautiful meadows. Altitude change is only about 500 feet over the 3 mile each way leg, but it is worth it! Stop at the Smokey Bear ranger station for directions.

Take Sudderth up towards the mountain, turn right at the traffic circle to Upper Canyon. Go approximately 1 mile to Ebarb Street (Story Book Cabin sign) turn right, go approximately two blocks to Perk Canyon Road, turn left and continue until it the paved road dead-ends.
This trail is smooth and meanders up through the forest for couple miles. You cross a handful of very small melt water streams. When it's time to ride it back down you can cruise it to take it easy or pedal down for a fast ride, but watch for the sharp turns and the hikers making their way up.
Thank |Beautiful trail. Riding up canyon is a good leg stretch, we turned around at the switchbacks. The trip back down is swoopy and fast. There are a couple of ladder bridges, nothing hairy, and a couple of optional gap jumps. I accidentally hit one of them at speed and sailed way over the gap. Wont recommend jumping it on accident.... Next time there I think I may just do it on purpose! Nice trail.
Thank |The trail was described as too easy by the locals but since I was cramped time I gave it a whirl. It is an easy trail withjust enough technical to teach the newer riders to be wary. It is nothing likethe local trails in my stomping grounds of El Paso, but the descent is a bunch of fun. Expect to see hikers and wildlife on the trail so keep an eye out.
Thank |I rode this trail thanksgiving weekend. At 6000 ft., the trail was a great challenge. I am accustomed to riding at 1300ft. Unfortunately, my computer was broken and I couldn't track the mileage. I think after 3 miles, the locals turn around. The trail keeps going and gets very steep. I ended up carrying my bike to the top. Lot of work, but worth it. It was beautiful! The downhill was awesome. I'm looking forward to going back. Happy Holidays!
Thank |Just got off the trail. it is great!!! Tons of fun, easy climb but has it's moments for the more advanced rider. I will definitely make this a regular for a quick ride.
