A dimly lit wooden bike path winding through a forest at night, with foliage on either side and a bicycle handlebar in the foreground. A flashlight illuminates the path ahead, revealing the wooden boards that make up the trail. Lake Hickory Trails mountain bike trail.

Getting there
From HWY 321 in Hickory, turn on the road between the Arby's and camper dealership. Go to the top of the hill and take a right at the stop sign. Travel about 1 mile and turn left at Hickory City Park. The park is marked with a dark green sign. Park your vehicle and start pedaling down the paved greenway. The mountain bike trailhead is just off the left of the greenway, after you cross the VFW driveway.

I've ridden here about 6 times; every time we visit our son in Hickory. Really a lot of fun for this FL guy. Springs loop is a great run to zip through. Broyhill adds a lot of technical with some speedy spots. Rode it over July 4th and it was much more "rooty " this past week; still had a blast. I guess the rain causes this.

These are fantastic trails. Everything from beginner to black jump line. The trails are marked well and maintained consistently. I am biased as these are my back yard trails, but they are some of the better ones around.

Im not sure what has happened since 2018 but this is by far the funnest one I have ridden to date. Well maintained. Lots of turns and slightly more technical than what I am used to. The views are amazing. What really got me was on an uphill and when i finally reach the top you can see lake hickory and it was pretty amazing.

This trail was just some backyard teens project prior to the $100k revamp in 2018. Much improved! But could be much better. Still "rooty" in many sections. Rocky in others. Some parts are very narrow with roots to boot. It has many flows, but does not flow entire trail due to obstacles above. Still, as mentioned, much, much better than before. Rated intermediate, but I would say a high-intermediate. 6-mile loop. The more fun trail is the beginner trail in the same park. It is only 2.25 miles, but everybody loves it. You will find the shredder, "semi-pro" guys on it on down to the little kids. This speaks to how much better it is than the intermediate trail. Flows for most of the trail. Excellent job on that trail!

I'm not gonna lie to you guys (and gals), from the other reviews I was expecting something a bit less intense. First off, this trail is more like a network of trails. You can ride it twenty ways and not ride it the same way twice. Some sections are easier and some are harder, but all are super fun. I'm rating this trail as advanced based on its hardest parts (rooty/technical and steep uphill climbs) but don't let that scare you off. These trails are a ton of fun and a great way to practice technique.

Had fun here, not to extreme but tough enough. Rode around here I think 4-5 times so far & seem to always take different routes. That's not a bad thing I like that there are forks & different options. Never far from the paved road either so if you have equipment failure, or had enough it's easy to bail out.

All around a solid trail. This trail will work you though. Great for training and cardio. Intermediate skill level ... can be very difficult for beginners. Very rooty ... through most sections, relatively technical, nice downhills, lengthy climbs, drops, crossings. Easy to skip sections if wanted. Fairly easy to follow. Dries quickly. Not too bad when wet (sopping) even with slick roots. Not too many riders on the trails at once. Nice pump/jump track between trail sections.
(warning to those who are afraid of snakes ... there are quite a lot of black snakes during spring/summer months)* Review edited 5/19/2012* Review edited 5/19/2012

I have been riding these trails for the past two months, after riding Mtn bikes again and I must say the trails at South Shore are very well maintained.
The trails are well marked and provide a great flow. I would catagorize myself as a beginer who is looking for fun while exercising. The South Shore trails have provided hours of fun while delerviring a very challanging pace.
I would like to thank those who maintain these trails and keep them in such excelent condition.

GET OFF I-40 TO 321 NORTH, TAKE A RIGHT, IN BETWEEN NISSAN DEARLER SHIP AND ARBYS. GO OVER SOME RAIL ROAD TRACKS TAKE A IMEDIATE LEFT AFTER THE RAIL ROAD TRACKS, AND TAKE UR FIRST RIGHT. GO UP THE HILL TO STOP SIGN AND TAKE LEFT, HICKORY CITY PARK SITS ON UR LEFT..........................

THE TRAIL CRISS CROSSES OVER A PAVED WALKING ROAD. SO IF SOMETHING HAPPENS, UR NOT TOO FAR FROM THE PAVED WALKING ROAD.

THE TRAIL IS MOSTLY UNMARKED, BUT U CAN KINDA FIND UR WAY AROUND. I GOT LOST A FEW TIMES. JUST SO HAPPEN A LOCAL WAS OUT THERE AND TAGGED ALONG WITH HIM.

THE TRAIL IS TECHNICAL, CLIMBING, AND ON THE BREAKS AND ROOTY.......... THE TRAIL IS TOUGHER THAN PEE-WEES IN THE ASPECTS OF TRAIL RIDDING. BUT PEE-WEES IS BETTER MARKED AND BETTER MAINTAINED.* Review edited 1/11/2007* Review edited 1/11/2007
