Mountain Biking Cheraw State Park Mountain Bike Trail

****   Add a review
#41 of 115 mountain bike trails in South Carolina
#2,545 in the world

This trail is a great example of what South Carolina has to offer. The trail uses every feature possible. The trail is almost completely singletrack except for the few fire road connectors. The first mile or two is weaving singletrack with a few short hills - really fast and winding. The scenery will change as you enter different areas from sandy and lots of tightly spaced pine trees to packed sandy, loamy dirt. The flow of the trail is smooth so you never really lose momentum. The deeper you go in to the woods, the more the terrain switches. Up through mile 7, the terrain is up, down, winding - but just fun to ride. The last three miles comes after you leave the small playground at the back corner of the property. You'll know this because the trail seems to follow the road back to the trailhead. This is one of the those trails where its best to ride AFTER a rain. The first two times I went was after a wet spell and the sand was packed and great to ride. Yesterday was the opposite. Some locals told me they haven't had much rain, so the trail was extremely dry which meant the sand was incredibly loose. There were many corners where trying to manuever at speed was impossible without a tire digging in, washing out and flopping a rider on his head. That still didn't deter me from having a great time, though.

Had some very nice scenery but the trail was pretty rugged with not a lot of flow. I went after a couple days of rain and the sand was still pretty loose. Was a very good workout and still happy i went!

The trail is definately a beginner trail. There isn't but 1 or 2 small jumps on the entire trail. You want to ride this one after a good rain due to the sandy soil. For the most I like it. Great 8-9 miles for training. Flows really smooth for most of the trail.

Cheraw State Park was fun trail. They packed a lot of trail into a small area. When I was there, they had just completed a controlled burn. It has hills with short climbs and descents. It flows really great. I would go back.

it is definitely a beginner trail but not a good one. theirs nothing exciting about the trail. it feels like a hiking trail and they just toss the bike name on it. While sand is not always a bad thing there is way to much of it on this trail and when I went it was starting too be overrun by plants.

Great beginners trail! Today was my first trail ride in nearly 25 years and I had a blast. This was my 13 yr old son's first time on a single track ever. He doesn't have much experience riding a bike period, let alone riding on a trail. He had an excellent time and cant wait to go back (neither can I).
There is some sand, lots of pine cones, and slippery pine straw to keep you on your toes. I am highly impressed with my kid's confidence and ability to ride the whole loop. Neither of us are all that fit, but we are working on it.

This was my first time out on a single track this past Sunday. Had a blast. Did the entire loop and did it a second time using all of the listed shortcuts. According to my GPS it was 10.9 miles for the two loops so the total length is not the 9.2 listed. Can't wait to go back.

Fun Ride... It was dry, so the sand was tricky.. nice rolling speed, in and out of the pines

I found this trail to be fun , well marked, and a good place for a beginner to start. I will try to increase my speed each time, the trees are kind of tight though.
If there are any females looking to ride on Fridays or over the weekends who would like to make a friend let me know. My husband isn't into MB so i'd like to find people who are :)

Nice singletrack but the sand traps and the brush are a killer.

Good trail, kinda reminds me of the Fort Jackson passage of the Palmetto Trail i.e. no extended climbs, some sandy spots but nothing too bad, good bit of pine-straw on the trail. The trail is in good shape and well marked. I didn't find any parts that were all that technical. Lots of tight single-track that twists though the trees and a few fire roads. The pine-straw on the trail kept me on my toes, it was pretty slippery in spots. The trail is not too far from Columbia, about an hour and a half. Good length about 9.5 miles I believe. Thanks to croscoe for showing me around the trail.

Loved the trail nice flow, good climbs. Some of the best riding in the sand hills, well worth the trip. Some sand traps, and the brush needs cutting back in some places, recommend shin gards.

This was my first time on a bike trail. I'm new to riding this sort of terrain so I rode slowly most of the time. I did find myself gaining decent speed down some of hills. Since it was dry today, the sand was rough in a few places, but I still had an excellent time and I can't wait to go back. If you ride this trail, be sure and stop and enjoy the views. Overall, I think that this trail was a great intro of what biking is all about.

rode it today in the rain. best ride i have had on a mountain bike since i moved back to this area from virginia. a lot of work has been done there and it really shows. great job whoever maintains the trail. i went with two other guys and we all agreed it was the best in the area. will go back for sure.
