Mountain Biking Overmountain Victory Trail
#33 of 549 mountain bike trails in North Carolina
This is of the Kerr Scott Reservoir trail complex, which includes Dark Mountain #752 and Fish Dam Creek trails. This trail is part of the federally-designated Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail. It follows the general route that American patriots from the area trod to confront the British Army during the Battle of Kings Mountain in October 1780.
Overmountain Victory Trail is a flowing ribbon of singletrack which runs parallel to N.C. 268 just to the South, and Kerr Reservoir to the North. It offers great views of the lake throughout its entire 7.6-mile (one-way) length.
The trail consists of short climbs followed by quick downhills - plenty of twists and turns. Bridge crossings, jumps, berms, and a creek crossing - this trail has it all. The best out-and-back I've ever ridden!
Approximate ascent one-way is about 525ft. So, the full out-and-back will give you about 1050ft of total climb.

Take N.C. 268 West from Wilkesboro. Three miles past U.S. 421, turn right on Reservoir Road. Follow Reservoir Road 0.4 mile and turn left at the Visitor Center sign. Park in the lot near the Visitor Center. The trailhead is on your left as you enter the Visitor Center parking lot. The trail can also be accessed from Bandit's Roost Campground, which is the turn-around point for the out and back trail several miles west off N.C. 268.
Rode OVT today. 1st time in about 9 years. The trail maintenance has really suffered. It used to be so smooth and flowy. Water runoff has rutted out a lot of the areas. It’s much more rooty. Sorta disappointed with it.
Thank |OVT is great. Great bathrooms at visitor center. Park and start there. Out and back. I believe this is rated as a beginner trail. I took my wife the first time I went and she about killed me. It was a cardio challenge for her and me. I have seen people on hybrids that may see that beginner rating and think its green-way like. I bet they turn around pretty quickly but I suppose it could be done. 2 spur trails exist off this trail which can really add mileage. (Horton's Hollar & Shiner's Run) None of these trails have anything very technical. This trail taught me that beginner is all relative. For Wilkesboro, this is the easiest trail. This would be an intermediate trail if located in Greensboro area.
Thank |Beautiful trail along the lake. Weaves back and forth with hills. Trail is narrow with some steep cliffs on the side. Not much room to pass other bikers. I am fairly new at this and had to walk a few of the steeper hills. The biggest challenge for me was you return same trail you enter. I learned quickly that I am left handed and a challenge going back out with the steep cliffs on my left vs right. Always learning something new with mountain biking!
Thank |Fun fast flowy
Thank |This trail had Really fun and exciting down hills but the uphills were steep and long not short like the description said they were i didnt ride the shiners loop but out of the three different parts of the trail (which were separated by road crossings i felt the last part had the best down hills with lots of switchbacks and berms and a short down hill ride down the road leads to a lake beach so pack a swimsuit
Thank |Arrived late and was only able to ride up Shiners Loop and back but had an absolute blast! Not very technical but I would say intermediate is a fair description; still not a beginners trail IMO.
Thank |COMBO with WC and KS
Thank |Love this trail. My wife and I rode this and we both enjoyed it. The trail is in great shape, has some good climbs and downhill sections.....great flow. I added upper and lower berry as well as shiners loop for a great ride. Thanks to those who take such great care of this trail and we will be back. Btw...great to camp at Bandits Roost and bike right from the campground.
Thank |I am new to mountain biking and to checking whether trails are open or not... So sadly, I drove an hour to find that the trails are closed due to being wet. Thankfully, dark mountain, only a few miles away, is open. According to the local ranger, "water drains better on that mountain."
Thank |Not that fun. If your going to visit the area go to Warrior Creek.
Thank |Love this trail!!! This is a must do if you are anywhere near the area. Not technical but super fast and flows better than any trail I have ridden. Also good for newbies. Brought my 11 yo out who is just getting in to riding and he had a blast.
Thank |Great trail. Leaf covered and bridges are slick when wet. Very.
Thank |I love Warrior Creek. By far the most fast and flowy trail at Kerr Scott. My favorite thing to do is put "The Desert Chase" track from Raiders of the Lost Ark on my I-pod, and then take off down this trail as fast as I can, imagining that I'm being chased by Nazis. They haven't caught me yet.
Thank |Would also give this a 9/10 if I'd not just ridden WC. Still a solid 8.5/10 and an incredible ride overall. We only had enough time to ride from the parking lot, out to Shiner's Run and back. Like WC, super flowy, fun trail, just not quite as many berms.
Thank |Best newbie trail out there and fast for the seasoned rider. I took my 7 year old son on it with no real issue.
Thank |I rode this back in May, so some of the details are blurry. We camped at the Reservoir and rode this out to the Dark Mountain trails and back. You can access the trail from the campground, which is very cool. Stand alone, this is a great out and back, but throw in the Dark Mountain trails and it's an even greater combo. Lots of flowy, bermed & bench cut sections with views of the reservoir. While there, also hit up Warrior Creek.
Thank |Great ride through cool forest.
Thank |Wooww!! If only every out 'n back was this much fun. Rode from the visitors center and back, and did the Shiners loop twice for a total of 16 + miles. It was great fun. Rode Shiners both ways and either direction rides about the same, IMO. This trail deserves its top 100 rating.
Thank |Fun trail. My 9 year old daughter was able to ride it but pick up the pace and its very fun for the experienced. Never really technical so look elsewhere if you want to be challenged. Just let ot fly and see how fast you get nefore you scare yourself!
Thank |Outstanding mountain trail. It flows great with lots of burmed turns and long downhills. It is an out and back so keep an eye ahead on the trail. Shiner's run is a worthy additional two mile loop. It is sweet out and back. This is an easier version of Warrior Creek.
