#31 of 388 mountain bike trails in Wisconsin
Because this trail system is relatively new, the trail hasn't been officially named, yet. The trail consists of two out and back connector trails and a loop. If you leave from the Bear Paw and ride everything you will have put on about 19.5 miles. Definitely worth the trip! Some of the sweetest flowing singletrack Wisconsin has to offer, and enough technical stuff to put even some of the most experienced riders' skills to the test!!! If you think riding over logs is fun, keep an eye out for the M.O.A.B. (Mother of All Boulders)! Basically it's a 4 ft. boulder that you ride up and over. This place is SWEET!!!

Trail layout and routing has potential if the Condition could be improved. You will experience an endless mix of small, medium and large rocks with a healthy dose of roots thrown in for good measure. The flow is nonexistent due to the rock and roots limiting any chance of moving over 5 mph. Do not attempt to ride it during damp or wet conditions As it is extremely slippery and unsafe. If a crushed base could be added to the entire trail to make it rideable, it could be a hidden gem.
Thank |Beginner Ride on advanced trail.
I rode one segment of this trail on my Fat Bike. It's was a bit beyond my skill and bike capabilities. The trail is fun nevertheless.
Plus there are plenty of options for exploring beyond the established trail. National Forest Roads criss cross the area and unmarked paths spring off the trails.
Be prepared for ticks and skeeters. A GPS is a good addition for keeping your bearing. Don't trust the cell phone.
Get out explore and enjoy the area.
Thank |I love these trails for what they are: one of the only set of backwoods tracks in all of Wisconsin. The area's variety is also pretty impressive. From the rolling, technical terrain north of the highway to the ridge top riding of the middle section to the fast, boulder-filled descending of the last mile, this trail will be sure to please on all all levels.
Thank |I wasn't sure what I'd find seeing this was last reviewed 3 years ago. However, I was pleasantly surprised. I started at the south end near Boulder Lake campground. The first spur is plenty fun. At the split I went right, though in looking back at the description, I think going left is more popular. This section was filled with punchy climbs, but nothing too over the top technical. It's perfect for an intermediate to advanced rider to fly through and have fun! At the next spur north, there is a section of double wide dirt road which I am typically not a fan of, but the pine aroma and opportunity for a short rest was nice. Entering singletrack again, I found the next several miles to be overgrown. Not terrible, but my legs got scratched up. This was an easier section. After crossing Hwy 64, there was fun woodsy riding again that was well maintained. At the end, I backtracked and at the split, went right to ride the portion I had missed. This is where all the large boulders are, some meant to be ridden and others that you have to weave around. A unique landscape, for sure! As I finished, I had 21 miles in about 2:15. I will definitely be back here when I'm in the area again! The trail is fantastically marked and perfect to ride alone if you're not familiar with the area like me.
Thank |First off, my nephew picked this particular trail and he has a much better bike and is younger than I am. Well, instead of entering from Nicolet National Forest, we entered from the Highway which meant slogging through logging roads approx. 2 miles before we found the trail. And it was a lot more difficult than we expected. The uphills over rocks and tree roots was strenuous and extremely technical. I think we did about an hour before we turned around because it started raining. The way back was sloppy and we even got lost before finding our vehicle. I'll wait before I go back again and get a few more trails under my belt. I've continued to mountain bike other trails such as Hartman Creek State Park and The Reforestation Trail in Green Bay. The Nicolet Trail kicked my nephew's ass and he hasn't single tracked since then.
Thank |Did a WEMS race here and really enjoyed it. The race incorporated a lot of DT which was okay, but the ST we rode was a blast. Definitely worth checking out again and again.
Thank |Great Place to ride when you couple the Nicolet trail with the network across the street at the Bear Paw Lodge. The system has technical trails that are really fun to ride. The stretch along the Wolf River is breath taking. Tremendous place to ride, it is one of the best kept secrets in the mountain biking community. It is a mountain bikers dream.
Thank |Great trail system. Very technical lots of rocks, boulders, ruts, steep climbs, descents, handmade obsticales, and some fast sections. Great views of the tornado path of 2010.
Thank |This trail is a real fun to ride and you will not find any other trail like this. Leave your front brakes at home and enjoy rolling over those HUGE boulders. And you'll be impressed how hurricane can change landscape - an enormous empty area that used to be a forest before. Could be a destination for a few day biking (campsites available next to trailhead). The only one thing is that a bit hard to locate that trailhead at first time.
Thank |2nd best trail system in WI after Levis Mound. I wouldnt say epic but it has alot to offer. Hilly, not typical flat WI cross country trails. Big ridable boulders. Fun comes after a few times of riding it. I saw a bear ones there with my pal. Lots of wilde blackberries.
Thank |This is a premier mtb facility in Wis. All done by a group of dedicated cyclist. EPIC. No shit. It is an unbelievable system. World class, almost. it connects two popular camping spots and lakes. And there is a private outfitter on the northern end that has now connected their trail system. spend a long weekend, at the minimum.
Thank |Road the Nicolet Roche trail both south and north of Hwy 64, and it was awesome. Not any big climbs, but plenty of up-and-down action. Lots of roots and bumps, but not too technical. You can carry your speed well, and the tight single track makes it feel like you are just flying along. This is a great trail.
Thank |Extreme tornado damage makes for a mega-challenge ride.* Review edited 11/10/2007
Thank |the trail now has a name. The Nicolet Roche trail.
Thank |nick-oh-lay row-shay. Roche is French for rocks and this trail has them. This not the typical xc trail. Leave your little sister at home. You can ride around the boulders, but test your skills and try to ride over 'em. We stopped counting, but there are at least 30 boulders in play.... I'm told there is more trail to come, with even more rideable rocks/boulders.
