Mountain Biking Lake Lurleen State Park Trail
#5 of 112 mountain bike trails in Alabama
This is a terrific trail that offers plenty of options for mountain bikers. The Ridge Loop trail (approx. 4 miles) is the the most approachable. The Tashka Trail is a 12 mile loop of good singletrack that can be a little technical at times. Add Five Oaks to the Tashka Trail to make it 15 miles. Add the trio of storm loops--Tornado, Storm, and Lightning--to bump it up close to 20 miles; throw in Ridge Loop and you will flirt with 25 miles by the time you return to the car.

I had bypassed this trail several times in the past, shame on me. This is a great fast ride with a little of everything. There are no crazy features, just a well groomed, well marked trail that offers 24+ miles of single track. Well done trail crew
Thank |pretty good trails but feel like they weren't very well signed and not very beginner friendly. high potential though.
Thank |Trails are rugged and very scenic with great shade. Some tough climbs with some fun downhills, but overall trails don't flow as well as other Alabama classics like Oak Mountain and Sylaward IMO. Tashka trail is classic old school mountain bike trail like Tsali. Ridge loop is more modern style machine cut trail.
Campground sites look very nice on beautiful lake.
Thank |This is a very well maintained trail system, good trail and intersection marking. The Ridge Loop is a great training loop, I did two laps, it has some small climbs and good down hills. This system is a good place to work on bike control and pacing. If youget the chance to, I recommend riding here.
Thank |May, 2016 - This was my first ride here, found the trail here on Singletracks. Let me begin by saying what a fun trail system this is. All I could compare to was a roller coaster ride. The trails are all singletrack and in excellent condition. The hills were moderate at best fantastic payoffs on the downhills, they seems to go on forever. The main description is a bit deceiving, if you do all the trails their is about 2,000 feet of climbing. Total mileage is 23 miles if you ride everything.
There is one main trail "Tashka" that runs around the lake, it is 9 miles long. From there you have four other loops you can add on.
Five Oaks was my favorite. I rode everything clockwise but you can ride either way. This trail will put a big smile on your face, just plain fun.
Tornado and Storm and also well designed, flowing trails. The downhills seem so much longer than the climbs.
The Ridge loop is the easiest trail and would be a great place to bring a newer rider. You can park at the north parking lot and have a nice, easy, scenic 4-5 mile ride. If you want a little more, just turn right and follow Tashka out as far as you want.
I know what you are thinking, I got paid to write this review, nope, just a mountain biker happy to find a great trail to ride. Thanks much to the local club who worked out the deal with the State Park to build and maintain these trails. I look forward to many more partnerships like this in the future.
Thank |Lurleen is a blast. fun flowy trails. Nothing much technical that I rode. Sandy corners are annoying.
Overall, this trail is great and I can't wait to go back!
Thank |The entire park is gorgeous! The main loop, Tashka, is a bit rooted and rocky but easygoing, while the branches, like Tornado loop, step up the challenge. The bridges had enough algae to make them ultra-slick as a brief rain came through.. they should lay a thin strip of wiremesh down. Definitely go counterclockwise so you're greeted with the overflow concrete waterfall near the end. I hopped in!
Thank |Very good trail system....one big loop around the lake with a bunch of smaller loops that lead back to the main loop. bring lots of water as this is about 23.5 mile total with no short cuts....unless you want to swim across the lake with your bike.
Thank |Wow! This trail is always so much fun. I feel like it gets overlooked even in its own hometown, seems like everyone rides Munny Sokol, but this trail is really a gem. Its got a primitive feel that makes you feel like your way out in woods, even tho its only 10 mins from downtown Tuscaloosa. Very unique trail. Kinda like blankets creek with all the loops, but so much more "raw". Lots of small rocks and roots all over but no big technical features. I rode it today and it was covered in leaves. I was still able to hit every loop, altho tornado and storm loops were a bit tough to see. Lots of short steep climbs, with switchbacks. Nothing categorized, but you better bring some legs, cause there are several climbs that are in the 150 ft to 200ft range, some pretty steep in spots. I climbed over 3200 feet today in 34 miles, and I felt it for sure. Several spots hit 15% and higher. The descents are a blast!! Got some great video on my Garmin Virb. Tashka is a great trail, and the Ridge loop is really a fast fun time. Totally worth the drive from Birmingham, without traffic I was on the trail and riding in a little over an hour from my front door. Rode it both ways now several times, and I gotta say counter clockwise is the best. Thanks WAMBA!!!!!
Thank |Lots of roots, rocks, fun downhills, and challenging climbs. Coming from Colorado this trail was a great relief and a lot of fun to find around here

Thank |I recently rode this trail again with a group of people this time and was actually able to make the entire loop and even take a few of the side loops, while the trail is still very technical the entire way, its a blast if you looking to get in about a twenty mile ride, the scenery is great and its just a great ride overall if you are able to handle the roots and hills it throws at you
Thank |There are now 23.5 miles of trail at Lake Lurleen. The vast majority of trailwork is performed by WAMBA, West Alabama Mountain Biking Asociation. Map link http://www.westalmtb.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=466&sid=67019291efc1e4d2a629297de71fe346
Thank |Extremely Technical, lots and lots of roots and rocks every part of the way. It would be great for advanced riders to hone-in skills, but definitely not beginner friendly
Thank |This ride was the perfect balance between steep climbs and fast downhills. Additional loops allow riders to choose distance up to just over 20 miles of trails.* Review edited 5/7/2012
Thank |I rode the full trail in a counter clockwise motion as one of the park employees suggested it. The tornado loop was definitely fun. The Lightning, Stormy, Tornado, and Five Oaks trail loops branch off of the main trail named the Tashka trail. If you want to ride every little piece of trail I recommend passing the first marker that indicates a trail branch and take the second marker, as they are usually not very far apart. This ride was definitely a work out as all the completed trails now equal approximately 21 to 22 miles. My GPS apparently had low batteries, as it died, otherwise I could have posted the updated loops! I will try to get to it soon. Overall this was a very nice trail with a few difficult climbs and a nice view of the lake.
Thank |started at the north trailhead and did the entire loop counterclockwise. The C.C. direction gets the hilly stuff over first, with the last 2-3 miles of trail being easy flat stuff along the lake. Get ready to grind up the trail at mile 15-16, coming out of the spillway.
The original trail system (Tashka) seems to flow the best, with some of the extra loops feeling like "added milage", rather than smooth singletrack. However, the tornado and Five oaks loops were good fun.
Since it is only 17-18 miles total..go ahead and do all the loops. Smooth trails with little rocks and roots... good fun!
Felt alot like Bonita Lakes in Meridian
Thank |Great singletrack around the lake; densely wooded trails that spur off Tashka Trail - two incomplete loops were disappointing to see! Watch out for ticks!!! Will be IMBA Epic level ride with completion of Tornado/Storm loops!!
Thank |Excellent trails. Very well built and maintained by druidcity.org. Even though it doesn't have the mileage of an epic trail (~16 at this time) it feels like one. It is also in a beautiful park. I highly recommend camping after a long day of riding.
Thank |Great trail, I have ridden all over the united states and this trail will be on my list to come back to. Not real difficult but challenging enough to keep your interest up. Nice flow, up and down many hilly areas. Only down side is it is a loop so out and back or all the way around.
Thank |
