A scenic landscape view featuring rolling hills, scattered trees, and cacti in the foreground. Power lines stretch across the image, leading into the distance where the land appears to taper off under a partly cloudy sky. The scene depicts a natural, rugged environment typical of a hilly region. Flat Rock Ranch mountain bike trail.

Mountain Biking Flat Rock Ranch

*****   Add a review
#2 of 279 mountain bike trails in Texas
#107 in the world

They have 44 miles of existing single track, Progressive Enduro Lines, and a
non-technical beginner loop. The trails lead through typical Texas hill country
terrain (rocky), with spectacular views, hill climbs (good ones), long downhill
sections (best of all), technical single track, and several creek crossings
(usually dry in the summer). We Have the 18 mile cross country lower loop,
the 15 mile cross country upper loop, and 11 mile beginner friendly green
arrow loop. Combine upper and lower loops and you can ride 33 miles without
doing anything twice. You can ride the first 6 miles of the green arrow loop
with a gravel bike. Also you can ride or session the knar of the 11 different
downhill Enduro lines.

They do have a map of the area at the main trailhead, and it is pretty much
the main entrance to all the trails. Bring your own water and tools and a
couple of tubes! They do have a mechanic stand at the trail head to work on
your bike. The cost is $15 per person or $10 per person for Military, veterans,
age 60+, first responders, and age 12 to 18 years old, 12 years and under are
free when accompanied with an adult; it is worth every dollar! On week days
fill out the waiver envelopes (at the pole shed) and drop your money in the slot
inside the honor box, or pay online and fill out waiver at
https://www.flatrockranchtx.com/fees Office is manned on Saturdays and
Sundays. TMBRA (Texas Mountain Bike Racing Association) And SET

The trail is well maintained with decent length. Had a camping trip with friends and rode on the lower trail the first day. It's smooth ride. I'd have stayed on this trail the next day if I had known the upper trail was very rocky and steep.

Very good, well laid out singletrack trails located on a private ranch. Interesting rocky terrain.

Great ride. $10 entry fee was completely worth it to ride groomed trails. A must hit if you are nearby. Pay attention to the website for open and closure times as the last weekend of october is when the close for the season.

Great trails. Challenging XC on the lower loop. Great climbs and awesome descents with spectacular views on the upper loop.

This place is all around great. You can practice XC, enduro and even some downhill stuff here. Have road it twice to date and once was for a race and the upper loop is a lot of climbing so great for XC but certain trails that drop off of it have almost a downhill feel to them. The trails could use a little bit better marking but hey, it's a giant place so I will give them a slight pass. Bring water, and food as it's a place worth hanging around a bit to explore as much as possible.

Awesome trails, well maintained and absolutely beautiful. The only downfall we found was that the maps were absolutely terrible and made no sense. We ended up going around in circles but we still had fun.

Nice place - typical Texas Hill Country - little dry, but that's what expected in Texas. Lots of fun flowing trails on 2/3 and the other 1/3 is rocky and rough but lots of fun.

Great place to camp - they even have rudimentary showers which make a post-ride beverage much more enjoyable!

Definitely worth the time and effort to ride this place.

Rode the Lower Loop this week-what great fun!! Jimmy the ranch owner was very cool and helpful. Some of the best singletrack I've ridden in Texas. Can't wait to get back out there and ride the Upper Loop

Awesome place to ride/camp. The trails are divided into a lower and upper loop. The lower loop is full of fun long downhill segments with steep and sometimes super technical climbs.

The upper loop is slightly more technical with long rock gardens and more abundant drops and steep downhills. They are currently adding more singletrack to the upper loop that will add another downhill section.

All the trails are directional so you can go at your own pace without worrying about hitting someone head-on.

    I highly recommend this place!

Best place I have ridden in the San Antonio area. Worth the Drive. If you aren't up for a tough ride stick to the local parks and places to ride.

We camped and rode the trails for 3 days in late September. I got to ride both loops a couple times. Upper loop more technical. My wife is a beginner and she had fun on the lower loop. The owner is a great guy and jumped our car when we ran down the battery one night. There is a shower. Loved the night time sky.

Great ride, probably a little less technical then Lower, and shorter. There's a good climb up Mt. Park, and some fun bits along the way. the ride from top down was a blast. I did worry a little when I saw a pair of bulls near full grown, but they left me alone. also saw sheep(I think Icelandic?) lots of deer, and other cattle.

Just a lot of good trail, with technical features thrown in. Many are non optional. Lots of drops, most role ok, some of the climbing had me pushing. Excelent work out. I did it after Upper, so it was a bit much of a good thing.

Rode today and perfect conditions. Ranch is extremely well maintained and marked. Upper loop has the pipeline climb for a good workout. One of the top 3 ranches in TX.

I usually ride the lower loop because my wife goes with me most of the time, but on Sunday 6/9 I went alone and rode the upper loop. I didn't realize what I had been missing. Although there are a few, short technical spots, for the most part it is a smooth well maintained trail. Please don't confuse smooth with flat. There is no spot on this trail that is flat. You are either going up a perfectly planned/thought out trail or descending a flowing track. My legs were on fire, my lungs were burning and there was a huge smile on my face, when I completed this 10 mile trek. If I had more energy I would have turned around and done it again. It was so good I even dreamed about it that night. The owners take very good care of both trails. Do yourself a favor and ride BOTH trails. Best place for MTB'ing in So TX.
The cost is now $7 but well worth it.

Rider questions

Q: Anyone have up-to-date info about the season start/stop dates for this trail? There is a review below from 2018 that states it closes end of October, but nothing on opening of season.

Q: If you camp at the ranch, is there a good / safe place to lock your bike? Or what do most people do with their bikes when they camp? Just upgraded my mtn bike so probably still overly cautious with my new favorite toy...
