Mountain Biking Sockum Ridge

***   Add a review
#50 of 99 mountain bike trails in Iowa
#6,493 in the world

This is a pretty good trail system when kept up. The time I rode it, it was kind of creepy because I came up a hill and there was some redneck dude with a gun sitting on a tree waiting to blast bambi. Make sure you don't ride alone! It had some great climbs and downhills but also some overgrown parts, if you ride in the late fall it's a lot better than summer. They did have a race there this past summe, so I'm assuming it's been kept up better than the last time I rode the trails. Worth the drive out.

Trails are fairly wide, typical multi use trail. That part in the name about "Ridge"...They meant that. There are plenty of steep fairly long sometimes technical climbs and potentially treacherous down hills(currently heavy leaf cover of obstacles). If your not a cardio monster they'll be challenging. Defiantly great for cardio training. Also a little hard to follow. Most of the trail is pretty obvious but I came with a map from the county web sight and never did find some of what it showed, but there were a couple loops not on that map. In general I had a good time here. I was in the area and probably would't drive too far for it but it's a great challenge and awesome workout. No potable water, primitive rest room. And use appropriate colors in hunting season (don't think it's necessary to refer to non vegetarian out door grocery getters as "red neck".)

I did the race held out here in 2005. The trail was overgrown in spots. Not many people ride these trails. I think if they were better maintained, they would be awesome. Nothing to special about them though. It's all in all a fairly decent workout.
