Mountain Biking Bolinas Ridge
#210 of 1,004 mountain bike trails in California
Starts off with a 6 mile climb on fire road. At all crossing stay straight ahead. Nice redwoods and views of coast. Dead ends at Bolinas- Fairfax road. This a nice winter ride. We have combined this trail with Samuel P Taylor park for some extra milage. Another good Single Speed ride.

Take Sir Francis Blvd off of Hwy 101 in San Rafael towards the coast. just passed the Olema 1 mile sign is the park along road.
Pretty much a fire road with great views. Almost half of the trail was rutted from cattle and a good winter. The other half is in the redwoods and is quite nice.
Thank |This is one of the local classics that has gone out of style as other areas have developed. It is still a good ride with great views from the ridge and it is always cool in the Redwoods at the top.
Thank |Trail was pretty torn up along the ridge when we went, making it very disjointed and more difficult than it needed to be. Great view, but anti flowy
Thank |Bolinas Ridge is spectacular. You may run across a few bikers and runners, but the fire road has enough room that nobody is miffed. We did Feature Ride 1 as suggested by bikemapdude.com and found the descent to Olema Valley via Mc Curdy Trail to be severely rutted. It is a poorly maintained trail that has overkill water bars for half the way down. However , the second half gets better. I suspect few people actually use it. At the bottom we crossed to return up the Olema Valley trail to complete a 20 mile loop. However, as stated, this trail is severely overgrown and the stinging nettle & poison oak forced us back to Hwy 1 to return to the trailhead at Sir Frances Drake. I am sure this changes depending on the season and amount of precipitation. Several people suggested that the Randall Trail is a much better connection. Next time, we will either stick to an out and back along the ridge or take the Randall Trail down to the valley below. All in all, It was well worth the adventure!
Thank |This trail is fun but there are some more tec. spots in some places but overall not that bad. A full suspension bike really makes this trail fun
Thank |Bolinas Ridge was one of my first mountain bike rides in CA - and WHAT a ride! It's a ridge (as the name suggests). There are basically 4 choices...
1. Start at the top of ridge and do an out-and-back
2. Start at the bottom of the ride and do an out-and-back
3. Start on one end and ride the ride (leaving a car at both ends)
4. Make a loop out of the ride by using the cut-offs
Personally, I like starting at the bottom and riding the ridge up. It's a long ride, but offers magnificent views of the ocean and the bay. Half the ride is through grassy fields (through a few private gates) and the other half is in the redwoods. Hard to beat this ride - as long as you've got the lungs and the legs!
Thank |Fire road with great views. Start at Kent lake on right side up to link ridge. Makes great downhill blaze on return.
Thank |Did this as a newby. Got lost and took us six hours( cool ) We rip it now. Really nice on a stormy day!
