Mountain Biking Pocahontas State Park

****   Add a review
#9 of 300 mountain bike trails in Virginia
#309 in the world

This is a Virginia State Park, website here:

http://www.dcr.virginia.gov/state-parks/pocahontas.shtml

This park is a nicely managed state park similar to Yorktown State Park (also a Virginia State Park).

There are trails for all levels, but none are really that hard. The scenery is typical Eastern Virginia woodland. I have never failed to see deer. Once I saw an American Bald Eagle. This is a good park to learn and to get some exercise. I have gone here with my children since they were 4. The singletrack difficulty is indicated in a fashion similar to ski slopes. The easy trail is the longest. The hardest trail is not that much harder than the easiest.

Getting there
In Chesterfield County, about 20 miles south of Richmond. Exit 61 off I-95, go west on Route 10 to Beach Road. The park is four miles on right. Enter the park (Parking fee = $2.00). Park near the CCC museum. Take the "Old Mill" bicycle trail to the right and the single tracks will be up ahead a ways on the right.

Rider questions

Q: thinking about traveling from NJ to VA in April for a long weekend of camping. Are these trails something that we could pull our child in one of those bike trailers on ? dont want to make the 4 hr drive with our bikes if we really cant pull her behind them. Any feedback or other parks to camp around VA would be appreciated !
A: Depends on which trail system you ride. There are two trails that were built with hand cyclist in mind and a very smooth, although they are rather short.

Q: Is there a trail for three-wheeled handicap bikes
A: Absolutely! The newish Swift Creek trails have about 7 miles of hand cycle-friendly trails. Come check them out.
