Mountain Biking York River State Park
#39 of 300 mountain bike trails in Virginia
Several different trails ranging from easy to intermediate. Fun for racing. Right on the York River so there are several ravines and small hills. Trail is very well-maintained by local mtn-bikers.

From I-64: take Lightfoot exit. Follow signs to Park. Park open dusk till dawn. Ask person at gate to point to the mtn-bike trails for you.
Really wanted clear this up, 26 MILES!, not 6 miles!!! There is an expert trail loop near the beginning called Marl Ravine (not to be confused with Morel Ravine at Pocahontas State Park) that is almost 6 miles. That is more of an intermediate type trail and a lot of fun. Then you ride up the fire road a mile and start the John Blair backwards as I do, that's about 10 miles of rolling hills and good up and down hills. Then you finish with a few more trails including the Bobcat which is really tough at the end of this ride. I usually finish up with 25.5 miles on bike computer, around 20 on GPS. Way more than the 6 miles listed here. I wonder how many other trails are off by this much on the site.
Thank |This is on the John Blair Trail Section C. A tree is down blocking the trail. We had to walk our bikes around. The tree is leaning against another tree & looks like the continuous rain lately has caused the tree to fall. This trail was a blast! A couple strenuous uphills, several fast downhills. Lots of ridgeline sections, flowy sections, narrow singletrack, some tight turns. This section is only 0.9 miles but the ride to the trail section is about 2.5 miles & is a decent workout itself so it makes for an excellent day of riding! We rode section D afterwards and it was mostly uphill with minimal downhill. I think it's about 1.5 miles but we were spent after that and damaged a rear cassette. Will stick with Section C. Section C was fantastic! So the maps are not very helpful and the park rangers did not know how to get to this section (concerning if you need help so keep track of where you are). This trail is not listed on the signs until you get right by it. You get to the trails by walking on the path behind the check in/pay station, toward the forest. That turns into the Backbone Trail & you ride down it for about 2 miles until you get to the Powhatan fork. At the fork you go to the left toward the Powhatan North Fork, to the right is the East Fork. The entrance to the John Blair Section C is shortly up on the right, maybe 0.5 miles or less. The Section C ends back at the Powhatan Fork but it is the East Fork, not the North. From there the signs are good to show you which direction to the parking lot. It is about 2.5 miles back to the parking lot. Unfortunately due to the broken rear cassette we had to walk our bikes the 2.5 miles back to the parking lot. One cool thing is they have a bike wash station behind the very clean bathrooms at the parking lot. We did not see any bikers on the 2 sections of trail we rode but there were hikers & other bikers along the way. I would definitely recommend this trail. It is not for beginners but we are not too far from beginners and had a blast.
Thank |Fun trails. After many many years ridding, I blew out my rear detailer for the first time and had to walk 3.5 miles back to the parking lot. Gota get my ole ride back up and go back and complete the 9 mile loop.
Thank |Years ago it was just, Marl Ravine trail across the road... This well established trail offered intermediate fun/fast, somewhat flowy slightly techy XC singletrack. It was the premier place to ride in Hampton roads but only offered 6 miles. Now there are over 20 miles with the addition of super easy Bearcat/Bobcat Run and John Blair Trails. These are strictly XC trails but theyre long and offer the rare opportunity to really throw down some long wattage efforts and sustain serious speed over miles of flowy singletrack. The speed you can carry makes this trail hugely fun. Great multiuse trail with a fire road to get you out and back.
Thank |With the addition of the John Blair Trail in the last few years there are now about 23 miles of singletrack here. A pump track has been added recently although its a wee one, the bumps are too close together, and it all needs better compaction.
Thank |Trails are generally moderate in difficulty but the riding is flowey and fun. For beginners there are plenty of doubletrack access roads most of which intersect singletrack sections allowing a mix of riding. I have attached a 2017 map of all bike trails (its on page 2 of the photo gallery) which is better than the Park map because it combines all the singletrack and the access roads. Take the Backbone Trail from parking lot to Laurel Glen, Bearcat/Bobcat Run, Marl Ravine, or John Blair Trails.
Fun trail. If your looking for a great place to practice your skills or have a fun outing with the family this is it. Trails are fun and can be challenging in spots. The park itself is beautiful with plenty of other activities.
Thank |Good stuff; Rode a little over 20 miles along the Marl Ravine and John Blair trails. Nice and tight single track. Not a lot of elevation change but enough to keep you honest. super fun. Will detail this in my new book, Mountain Bike Virginia
Thank |Good trails laid out well. Lots of winding and looping around ridges and valleys. Nothing too technical in most of the singletrack. I hear Marl Ravine is most difficult but we didn't have enough time to try it. Worth a short trip since there are over 20 miles of trail open to cyclists.
Thank |Single track with switch backs for most of the distance...would ride again!
Thank |This is a pretty nice trail system that features some pretty hardcore switchbacks that force you to really be in control of your bike. As for hills and downhills, this trail pretty much rolls the whole time so you while there aren't many strenuous uphills, you also don't get any white knuckle descents. I rode the Marl Ravine and the Bobcat Run and both were fun rides.
One of the best parts of YRSP was the amenities. There were a lot of other things to do at the park and the facilities were quite nice. In the end, if I lived in the area, I would ride this a lot. Since I don't, I won't be making any trips just to ride this trail.
Thank |A good trail for the tidewater area with way more hills than is expected.very good use of the terrain. Some sandy areas to watch out for.
Thank |Pretty decent ride. Some roots and rocks. Tight twisty singletrack. My honest opinion is that if you are in the area, you should check out Freedom Park instead. Way more fun there.
Thank |Make sure to get the map of the park and go to the bike trails. I was in a hurry and just went right off the welcome center into the walking trails and wasted the trip entirely. So the map that gives you the mountain bike trails is a must! Great location and easy to find. Lots of wildlife, really wish I hit the actual bike trails. Maybe next time I am in the area.
Thank |I rode this trail last week, and it's the best I've found in the Hampton Roads area thus far. The Marl Ravine trail was a tad tricky in places, but overall not too difficult.
Thank |The marl ravine is an awesome trail full of tight twisty rooty single track! A must ride in Williamsburg
Thank |Road it last fall. Great trail but a lot of leaves. Can't wait to go back this spring
Thank |I liked this ride. It was challenging and alot of fun
Thank |Excellent ride, the folks at EVMA have done AND DO a tremendous job keeping this trail up for everyone to enjoy. Marl Ravine is an extremely fun trail. Thank you EVMA!
Thank |Very fun and scenic trail system. Marl Ravine has a twisted little downhill/switchback section that has so many roots it's like a staircase from hell. Made me realize that I really need a better rear shock :) It's a very fun trail I would certainly ride again.
Thank |Marl Ravine is an awesome trail, well laid out and a blast to ride
