Mountain Biking Sycamore Cove

****   Add a review
#93 of 549 mountain bike trails in North Carolina
#1,794 in the world

Head back down the highway to find the trailhead. The trail is on the left side of the road as you head back towards Hwy 280. Follow the blue blazed trail. Combine this trail with Thrift Cove by way of Grass Rd. for a longer ride. This trail has some extreme downhill and some pretty serious elevation change. Very similar to North Slope.

Getting there
"From Asheville, take I-26 South to exit 9 (NC 280). Go right towards Brevard. Go approximately 15 miles to US 276. Turn right. You will see the huge rock sign that says Pisgah N.F. Go about 1.2 miles and park at the second parking lot on the right beside the work center.

Super rooty, which limits speed, but otherwise great trail. Beautiful scenery along creek, fun water bars, nice ride. Rode counter-clockwise. 45 min loop. Add Thrift Cove to bottom of Black Mt to double the length and get some awesome DH.

First part of the trail was very steep, roots, and lots of washed out areas. Did lots of walking the bike. Pretty long intense uphill. Last part of trail was awesome with lots if technical downhill. Very fun. Still had to be a bit careful because of all the rain causing some deep washout areas. Deginatelt a fun challenge!

Rode North Slope first, crossed the road down the street to jump on Sycamore. It started out as a tough technical climb. The leaves made it very slippery and we had to hike a bike in spots. After a pretty long climb, the decent was wide open and lots of fun. Lots of jumps and a ton of speed. Definitely a fun trail with options to connect to other trails.

This is one of my favorite trails, although I generally ride it the opposite way as posted (I've ridden both ways) If you go up grassy roads first its easier uphill and more technical singletrack downhill. You can also combine black mtn to thrift cove to grassy roads to sycamore to make a lengthier ride. It normally takes me around 45 mins to an hour to ride grassy roads and sycamore

This is another of my favorite short rides in Pisgah, especially when combined with North Slope across the street during the winter. First half of the climb is pretty technically challenging, and indeed there is one section that I'm sure if I've ever made. It's nonetheless quite fun, and the second half is more mellow. The downhill is quite fast, with some decent technical challenge, though it is accordingly over quickly. A log bridge has recently been added to the bottom, which is welcome in that it avoids both soft ground and adds technical challenge.

Cool trail. Pretty rhododendron tunnels, fun final downhill. I have to walk my bike up the begining though (if you start on the super steep end). I like Thrift Cove much better, of course.
