Mountain Biking Bald Eagle
#163 of 549 mountain bike trails in North Carolina
This trail is pretty tight but VERY rooty. This trail seems to be very overused and tends to get very wet after it rains. Good workout but be prepared to be shaken til you can't shake no more.

"From Greensboro, take 220 N (Battleground Ave.) towards Lake Higgins. Turn left onto Hamburg Mill Rd. Take the second left and park in the gravel beside the fence.
Really good beginner trail. Hadn't been on my bike yet this season and this was a great opportunity to get back into the saddle. The trail was moderately well maintained (2 or 3 big tress down across the trail). Not very technical at all, but flows well, Although plenty of roots, a couple of bridge crossing and a few puddles made for a good ride. Description says about 6 mils. We did almost 9 mil with a few splits, but trail is marked and very easy to follow. It was very quite and no other bike traffic at the time. There were a few hikers here and there.
Thank |This trail is a fun ride, but out of the local lakes trails in Greensboro, it is probably my least favorite.
Thank |You can ride the first part of this trail (upper parking lot outside marina to carlson dairy rd) without much problem at all but once you cross the street you start hitting downed trees. You can jump over the first one no problem but 1/2 a mile after that the trail basically ends because there are like 4 big pine trees down on the trail. I'd probably skip this one for now on a bike until they clear it but people still like running out there because there aren't any major climbs. Definitely rooty but with full suspension you can plow through it. Will shake you to death riding hardtail. Go to Owls Roost, its just around the corner down Battleground
Thank |There are some roots but not nearly as rooty as everyone bitchin about. If your familiar to the area, Reedy fork is much much more rooty this was a nice ride geared towards beginners can get boring for someone of experience as it's not technical at all but a nice ride somewhere around 3.7miles one way
Thank |As everyone has already pointed out, this trail is roughly 35% roots. I had a bit of wrist fatigue throughout as a result, but I'm a noob on an 11-year-old 26" hardtail, so my opinion is only about as valid as my suspension. ;) If you're going to come out to Greensboro, ride Copperhead or Wild Turkey (both Intermediate, and W.T. has some optional more difficult obstacles). If you're looking for beginner trails in the area, Blue Heron and Kingfisher are highly praised by the locals.
Thank |Well, let's see... There are roots, roots, and more roots. In between the roots are some good sections of trail. Not much in the way of climbs though. As of 7/27/14 all the trees that had fallen across the trail had been removed.
Don't ride too aggressively as there are many blind corners and frequent hikers. If you want to ride aggressively, go ride Wild Turkey.
Did I mention the roots?
Thank |Rode Bald Eagle for the first time. Roots, Roots, Roots! Bring your 29'er or better yet your hiking boots.
Thank |Easy to get to and could be great, if not for all the ROOTS. I guess if you want a frustrating workout, this trail is for you. Great scenery though.
Thank |To many roots!
Thank |Nothing Super Technical and the roots will jar your brains out, but the faster you go seems to smooth that out. Good views and decent length to the trail but It needs some TLC there were about nine trees across the trail that had to be climbed over or under. With a little work could be an enjoyable ride.
Thank |A lot of roots, nothing special, relatively unkept compared to other trails, just wasn't impressed. Fairly short, much better trails in the area.
Thank |Man, this would still be one of the best runs in Greensboro if it werent so washed out and un-kept. The roots are too much. But great terrain and great length. Too bad
Thank |Easy. Many eagle citings. Wear shorts.
Thank |I got a mountain bike for christmas, and this was the first trail I went on. Not very enjoyable, like everyone else said, VERY rooty. But the views of the lake were nice.
Thank |This is not a bad beginner trail except the roots are enough for people not enjoy the riding very much. Couple sections had trees across the trail and you had to pick up your bike and step over.
There is not much climbing or technical sections/obstacles. It was pretty fun to run fast and get better at turns and trying to ride over all the roots.
TOO MANY ROOTS>
Thank |Very rooty even for my friends full suspension and I have a hardtail so you can only imagine. Way longer than the signs say. Overall this trail was okay. Wasn't as difficult as i would have liked.
Thank |This is an alright trail there alot of roots but if you have a nice free ride or cross country bike like me it is actualy kind of fun. there aren't many jumps but there are a good bit of hills. just be ready to do some pedaling but dont even bring your bike out if your not into a rough ride.
Thank |there are tons of roots i almost broke my seat trying to ride over them the other than that trail is easy, and not that long
Thank |"Rooty" is an understatement. The roots, rather than being located in slower, difficult terrain, are often located in faster, straighter sections. I'd never lost my clamp-on tire pump before, but lost it here several times. I found the third of the trail nearest the Lake Higgins marina (Hamburg Mill Road) the most interesting and enjoyable and the third furthest upstream (swampy area) the most annoying, partially due to swarms of biting flies that dove into the air vents in my helmet. I do recommend the optional Bald Eagle Loop side trail, which is less heavily travelled and presents more elevation changes, though it's lined with poison ivy. There is a parking lot at the far end (Brass Eagle Loop, just off of Fleming Road) as well as at the Hamburg Mill end. On some maps it appears as if the Beech Bluff Trail, across the creek from the Bald Eagle Trail and between Brass Eagle Loop and Lewiston Road, would make a return trip more interesting, but signage indicates that it is off-limits to bikes (I didn't ride it). Bald Eagle is supposedly off-limits to horseback riders, but some obviously ride there nevertheless.
Thank |I haven't ridden all the way down and back (because I'm not quite in shape), but I have ridden most of it. There are a lot of roots, but nothing difficult to get over. Try not to go on really hot days because it can get real humid and muggy. Also, watch out for the bugs. They were all over me.
