Mountain Biking McMurtry Trail

****   Add a review
#6 of 64 mountain bike trails in Oklahoma
#1,176 in the world

Awesome singletrack loops in Central Oklahoma. Four loops total, @ 6-7 miles each, 27 miles total. Well-marked trails, good trail map available at Ranger Office at Park entrances on both sides. Lots of shade, very few other bikers, take lots of bug spray and water. Short climbs, switchbacks in a forested and/or prairie environment! You can ride most of the trails fast, but there are some rock outcrops, rooted climbs, sometimes sandy corners, and a few washouts. Aerobic difficulty will depend on how many miles you ride; About 5 for one loop only. Trails are usually well maintained, but can be overgrown in the summer. Cooper's Bike shop on Main Street in Stillwater will have most of what you might need.

Getting there
There are two trails on each side of McMurtry Lake. For the EAST side (the most popular side), Go 6 mile north of Stillwater on US HWY 177, and then 6 more west on Burris Road (you'll see a sign for Lake McMurtry). You'll run straight into the East Rec. Area. The SE trail starts to the east of the parking area, by the lake and pavillion. The NE trail starts north of the ranger station. Look a little bit, you'll find both cuz the road is a loop. For the WEST side, take OK HWY 51 west from Stillwater, OK, for about 3 miles, go north on Redland Road. Take a left (west) on Airport Road and you'll shortly see signs for the West Rec. Area. Take a right (north) and follow the roads to the ranger station. Both trailheads are across the road (you already passed them) from the ranger station. Call 405-747-8070 for directions

Rider questions

Q: How soon can you ride after a rain?
A: Depends on the season. 1/2" of rain during the growing season will get soaked up within 12hrs usually, but that same 1/2" when things are dormant could take several days.
