Many of us have a New Year’s tradition of going for a mountain bike ride on January 1 to kick the year off the right way. Often this ride isn’t about going fast, or pushing our limits; it’s more of a celebration of health and provides a reason to get outside, even if it’s cold.
All of this makes New Year’s day a great day for group rides! With help from the Singletracks community, we put together this list of group rides taking place on January 1, 2020. Most if not all of these are super informal and zero cost rides, so feel free to join in.
Do you know of a New Year’s day ride, either organized by a local bike shop or just a group of friends, that we didn’t include? Let everyone know about it in the comments on Singletracks!
Mail Run (Big South Fork, Tennessee): Varying routes ranging from 8 miles to 35 miles in length. Hot chocolate and coffee at the start!
New Years Day with Cartecay (Bear Creek, Georgia): You’re always in for a good time with the folks from Cartecay bike shop. The plan is to ride to the Bear Creek overlook “and more.”
Batsto Mountain Bike Ride (Wharton State Forest, New Jersey): Registration is required for this 10-mile, easy-pace ride.
CAMBA 50/50 Poker Fundraiser (Tremont’s Lincoln Park, Ohio): The Cleveland Area Mountain Bike Association has been organizing this New Year’s day ride for 19 years in a row!
DNK Presents New Year’s Ride (Brown County Park, Indiana): This group ride is billed as “a fun and exploratory ride through the beginner and intermediate trails in the park” and is designed “to encourage people to get outside in the winter.”
New Year’s Eve ride (Santos, Florida): JCs Bike shop flips the script with their New Year’s Eve, all-skill-level ride. Note: the ride rolls out in the morning, leaving the night free for counting down the new year.
North Georgia MTB Association (Jack Rabbit Trails, North Carolina): The Jack Rabbit trails offer well-groomed singletrack suitable for riders of most abilities.
Evergreen Ride/Social (Private Trails, Washington): The cryptic event announcement says this ride is for intermediate to advanced riders with endurance, and that participants will need to sign a “location nondisclosure agreement.” There’s a post-ride potluck BBQ, so bring a dish to share and something to throw on the grill. RSVP only.
First Day Bike Ride (Lory State Park, Colorado): The Friends of Lory State Park have a lot planned for bikers, hikers, and equestrians on January 1. Meet at the Arthur’s Rock trailshead at 9:30 for hot beverages and snacks, then head out for a group mountain bike ride at 10am. Open to riders 8 years and up.
Tell us about your local New Year’s mountain bike group ride in the comments, or even better, add it to the Singletracks event calendar!
