Mountain Biking Calabash Labyrinth

Park at the corner of Arcadia & Calabash Roads and ride from there down Calabash Rd (tar) then straight up past Calabash Kennels on the dirt track to access Calabash Lane trails, or follow the tar road sharp right and look out for the first batch of singletracks on the left. Very limited parking (one or 2 vehicles only) at Calabash Lane gate, and Calabash firetrail gates. Trails are unmarked because they are unsanctioned, so you will have to return a couple of times to familiarise yourself with the network. If you want to get in some XC marathon training distance, ride from Galston Village>Arcadia Rd>Gribbenmount Rd>Bayfield Road (dirt) Bayfield Road* (tar)>Blacks Road*>Arcadia Road*>Calabash Road. (**there is nice singletrack running next to Bayfield, Blacks and Arcadia Roads) On the way back to the village, why not take a detour (via the Carrs Road entrance) through Fagan Park?

Unsanctioned, extensive community-built singletrack trails network created primarily for horse riding. Please respect the heritage of the area and do not remove log jumps for the horses- there are plenty of alternative tracks for mtb riding around all of them. Trails are all twisty singletrack with some nice flow sections and they follow the contours on either side of the ridge lines traversed by Calabash Road (tar) and Calabash Lane (dirt) and Calabash fire trails (dirt). This is technical, intense riding, but you can stitch together a lap of over 14km with numerous other variations and natural technical features to discover. Expect to cross the roads or ride along them for short sections- be mindful of the occasional motor vehicle along the narrow, single-lane tarred Calabash Road. There are beautiful views, rock gardens and ridge line rock sheets to take a breather and admire said views. Summer (Nov-Feb) sees Legions of spiders on these trails- think Mirkwood... Don't ride here alone in summer because you need someone to spot them and brush them off your ponytail, shoulders, helmet, bike... creepy! Spring, however, ushers in a fragrant garden of Eden containing every native wild flower you could possibly imagine!
