The Voice & Spirit of Mountain Biking in Durham
What is the DMBA?
The Durham Mountain Biking Association (DMBA) is a non-profit association, formed in 2005 to advocate for mountain bikers in Durham Region. Our missions are to create, enhance and preserve trail opportunities and to build the mountain biking spirit and community in Durham Region. The DMBA is an International Mountain Biking Association (IMBA) affiliated club.
What does the DMBA do?
Advocacy
The DMBA advocates for mountain bikers in and around Durham Region. We actively work with local land managers and owners to enhance the mountain biking experience and to preserve our access to good riding areas. When a threat arises to our access to an area we organize and work to retain access. When new riding area opportunities come up, we are there to help landowners understand mountain biking, its place on their lands and the positive contributions we can make.
Trail Work
We plan, layout & build new trails and repair and maintain existing trails. Over the past seven years we have helped design, build and raise funds for over 15km of new trails in and around Durham and more are planned for this year. We constantly do trail work to maintain and improve trail conditions and safety. We conduct Earth Day road-side clean-ups to keep our riding neighborhood clean and build ties with landowners and local residents.
Education
We teach new riders, young and old, the skills to enjoy their mountain biking experience. We coach and encourage each other to improve our abilities. We promote the importance of riding responsibly, courteously and respectfully. We inform the public to improve their understanding and opinion of our sport and educate riders about local issues and how to use trails responsibly and share them courteously and safely with other users.
Riding
Since we are a group of mountain bikers, we love to ride! We host regular, group rides in Durham Region for a range of skill and fitness levels. We take monthly road trips to interesting new riding spots. We enter recreational and competitive teams in mountain bike relays and adventure races. And we hold annual special events like Pancakes and Kids in the Forest Day and IMBA's Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day to encourage kids and families to enjoy mountain biking and appreciate the local woodlands and trails.
