For those who have tried it, what do you think? Tell us in the comments below.
Been riding e-mtb for 3+ years and am on my second one. Why, because I don't have the gifted body (asthma for 45 years = reduced lung capacity - about 75% capacity of men my age and height who don't have asthma) and I'm damned if I'm going to let that keep me out of the mountains! For me the e-mtb is an absolute God-send as it enables me to access the bigger (longer, further, higher) rides that New Zealand has in super-abundance, including my local favourite, the Dun Mountain Trail near Nelson in the South Island.
Current bike is the Specialized Levo SL, a dramatic change from the Spesh turbo Levo 6Fattie. Yes, I have to work harder on the climbs (but still easier than on muscle bike) but the downhill is divine! I also get the best workout in gorgeous back-country.
At 71 years old I reckon I've earned it and the choice of the less powerful Levo SL is pretty much about right for me. There are plenty of my age who ride the bigger, more powerful machines but they don't get as far with out very heavy (about 3kg) spare batteries and they miss out on the playful descent.
I'll leave it at that for now. Hoping it's useful.
Same here, asthma nearly stopped the mtb sport for me going into my 40's. It wasn't an endurance or fitness issue, but simply a lack of oxygen. My e-MTB changed my life. Now I ride triple what I used to and am in the best shape of my life. Anyone that says an e-MTB is cheating or doesn't provide a workout simply doesn't understand. I can push myself further and longer than ever before, and I could whoop the 25 year old version of myself after training on my e-MTB the past couple years.
Yes, I've been riding a Turbo Levo all over the place since 2018, including singletrack. It does not improve or diminish my skills. My average speed tends to be a bit lower than friends on MTBs, probably because I'm risk averse (getting too old to crash) and because I like to slow down and even stop to take in the natural surroundings from time to time. Here in the Northeast the opposition to eMTBs is slowly dissolving. Many MTB riders who were formerly opposed have changed their minds after riding eMTBs. Many have purchased eMTBs, and many more are planning to. It turns out that the fears and concerns about eMTBs have come to nothing. eMTBs are a non-issue. We're all the same people riding bikes. One community really, just different bikes.
I switch days riding my analog SC Hightower 29er and Specialized Levo 27.5 depending on different factors ie group vs solo. Regardless of which one I ride the same trails which are 90% singletrack. After 100s of rides on both I can say with certainty they leave the exact same footprint. There is no difference. The bad rap class 1 eMTBs get is mind boggling.
I've ridden mountain bikes for about 15 years in my home state of VT as well as many other parts of the US. This past winter my partner and I rented e-fat bikes w/studs from a local Haibike vendor in Thetford, VT and went riding on single track. We were GIDDY! It's the same sport, sort of. We felt that the fundamentals are nearly the same, but you can just go farther, go longer, have a totally different kind of riding experience where carrying extra stuff in your pack like extra gear is a non-issue. I have worked hard to increase my endurance over the years, but I'm never going to be able to go for a 30 mi XC ride on my own power - I need some assistance. We're not getting rid of our analog Stumpy's any time soon, but we do have more bikes in the stable now. It's just fun. And def NOT like a motorcycle; I have a dual sport Honda and that IS a diff sport completely. The existence of ebikes may hurt some egos out there, but allowing more people to ride in the woods (and joining local clubs with their dues$$), level the riding field a bit, isn't a bad thing as we see it - but continuing to educate ALL riders about being a good trail stuart, respecting land owners and anyone involved with the trail making/volunteering efforts is CRITICAL for everyone in this sport, as there have been way too many negative situations arising on the trails over the last few years and that has to be addressed; independent of whether a bike has a battery or not. Peace.
First time I tried any sport in my life it was mtbing I was 51years old and my 13 and 11 year old boys wanted to give it a go. I was on a reg bike and I hated every second of it. Not wanting to give up, I grabbed a 999.00 ebike from Costco. BOOM! Game changer for me. Allowed me to keep up with my boys and I fell in love with it. About a year later and 650 bike miles, I'm down from 215lbs to 165bls. Never felt better and still riding all the time. I'm not out there on my Ebike trying to best anyone. I'm out there to enjoy time with my boys. #rideon
Ebiked up a techy climb I *barely* made on the analog bike just before and was amazed how entirely effortless it was. Lots of fun but the challenge is gone.
You just need to try harder climbs now, that's all. Before my eMTB, I never tried trails out of my green and blue comfort zone. Now it's black diamond or go home.
Digital bike, hmmmm....
I am all for the ebike since a very close friend had purchased one following the resection of his aorta. The guy tried to go John Ritter but got freakin lucky that the aneurism of the aorta was discovered during another diagnostic procedure. Back to the ebike... I took it for a test ride and it was like the difference between a 2.3l 4 banger vs. an 8l big block! The acceleration and speed was a blast! My buddy hacked the speed governor at one point and that bicycle hauled ass! Frankly, I get burned out by the dimwts that think these are "motorcycles". I would gladly find it true if these bicycles had the power that a true electric dirtbike has... A Bafang 620 has ~160 Nm torque where a dirtbike has far, far more torque than that! So did my KTM 325 2 stroke with a cast iron piston in the hole! Hauls ass, sure but there is something called respect and courtesy, terms that most cannot conceive in todays climate.
The only people who ride a motorcycle (eBike) in my area do so because they have medical conditions/injuries that won't allow them to ride a bike.
I foresee eBikes getting grouped with motorcycles and trail access being restricted as prices drop, because... well.. they are motor driven cycles. Non-cyclists already see mountain bikers as reckless and adding a motor they are basically a danger to society :D
I witnessed in the 90's single track access get revoked in the SF Bay Area due to interactions with bikes and hikers. I feel motorization only increases these poor interactions on single track (people riding fast uphill and feeling entitled to right of way).
Nothing against ebikes but I hope they are ridden responsibly on single track trails otherwise they do risk getting access revoked for ebikes and possibly general bike access too.
