Formation snuck behind the mountain bike media airwaves in 2019 when it first held its ladies-only progression camp on the wild spines of Virgin, Utah. After a year with no event — ala COVID — Formation returns to Utah from May 24 – June 1, with Red Bull as a title sponsor of the event.
Eight of the top athletes will return to the camp, with industry mentors to guide the riders through the week on Virgin’s loose and dusty lines. The camp will have riders and guides creating top-to-bottom lines, similar to the way that athletes do at Red Bull Rampage.
But, rather than a competition focused on points awarded by judges, Formation is a “women’s big-mountain progression session,” made to develop the women’s freeride field and create a better path.
“The first year of Red Bull Formation was a huge step in the progression of women’s freeriding,” said Hannah Bergemann in a press release. “It proved that there is space for women in that realm, and that people want to see and are inspired by the content. The significance of having Formation for pushing women’s freeriding is that it provides a platform for women to collaborate which accelerates the sport’s progression.”
Bergemann was at the first Formation and will be at next month’s event too.
